Happy New Year. Hope you are having an awesome 2020 so far.

For lots of us, we started the new year with a renewed commitment to big goals, ready to take on new challenges. But some of the energy and drive we had for tackling new goals on January 1st may start to lag a bit around the end of January.

Need some motivation to keep you on track?

I gathered a few interviews that leave me feeling energized, inspired, and awed by the power of the human spirit and the power of sport to help people overcome obstacles.

I hope you enjoy hearing from these amazing people as much as I did.

See you at the races,
Bob

Over the holiday break, I had the pleasure of spending time with the incredible Rob Mendez. You may remember Coach Rob from the ESPYs, where he was honored by ESPN with the 2019 Jimmy V Award for Perseverance.
Rob was born without arms or legs but overcame every obstacle in his way to coach high school football.

One of my favorites from this year's Breakfast with Bob from Kona was Camilla Pedersen. Camilla's energy and positive outlook is infectious.

She was in a horrific bike accident in 2013 while training for her first Kona, and in an induced coma for 19 days. After a long recovery, she took eighth in Kona in 2015, eleventh in 2016, and was back again for Kona 2019.

In Nice for the 70.3 World Championships, I sat down with Holly Lawrence to catch up, and we had a great conversation about keeping the faith when dealing with injuries.
While racing the Oceanside 70.3 in 2018, Holly actually took second place but raced with what was later diagnosed as a fractured ankle. She was out for eight months, but the 2016 Ironman 70.3 World Champion made it back to the 70.3 World Championships, where she would finish 2nd to Daniela Ryf. We chatted a few days before the race.

At the Ironman World Championship in October, a young man captured the hearts of pretty much everyone, as he became the first double above knee amputee to finish the toughest day in sport...and lit up the course with his megawatt smile: Roderick Sewell
I sat down with Roderick in New York City to talk about his background and his incredible journey from homelessness and a fear of swimming to the finish line in Kona.

Personally, for me there is probably no one who could lift me up more than Jim MacLaren did.
We just posted a long-lost video with Jim from the 1994 Competitor Magazine Endurance Sports Awards, right after he was injured for the second time.

WATCH here.

As Jim said that night: "Behind every tragedy is a gift." Jim was the spark that started the Challenged Athletes Foundation and since then, the foundation has raised over $112 million dollars and given out over 26,000 grants to help get challenged athletes in the game of life through sport.
