NOW OPEN!
January 25 - May 3, 2020
For this thought-provoking exhibition, the AGA commissioned the artists below to envision and create a ‘nest’ to cope with the end of the world, however it may come about. From hopeful and optimistic to humorous and ironic, these ‘nests’ offer reprieve, refuge, rejuvenation and difficult truths.
Cindy Baker and Ruth Cuthand | Bruno Canadien and Niki Little
Jake Chakasim | Luanne Martineau | Camille Turner
Organized by the Art Gallery of Alberta. Curated by Amery Calvelli, Catherine Crowston, Franchesca Hebert-Spence, Lindsey Sharman and Jessie Ray Short.
The exhibition also includes a special interpretive project with local designers and collaborators to offer an interactive visitor experience on the themes of Nests for the End of the World. Thank you for the support and partnership of the following individuals who made this project possible:
Leigh and Victoria Wright of VIGNETTES
Amos Kajner-Nonnekes of DESIGN, etcetera.
Jason Purcell and Matthew Stepanic from Glass Bookshop
AGA yoga instructor Tori Lunden

Give us a hand! Participate in community-driven and hands-on visitor activities during Nests. Inspired by Luanne Martineau's sculpture, Knitter Woman, visitors can hand-knit cords that will eventually be stitched together to create baby blankets for the Terra Centre for Teen Parents. As part of this activity, the AGA is accepting donations of:
|
|
|
- yarn in sizes 0 and 1 (also called fingering/sock/sport/baby yarn)
- chunky and super bulky yarn sizes 6 and above
Donations are gratefully accepted at AGA Guest Services. All yarn donated will be used for a community project as part of the exhibition.

Ruth and Cindy have recreated the space where these two friends and collaborators meet to discuss the future—the backyard hot tub. Here are the steps:
1: Sign up: online here or onsite with AGA Guest Services.
2. Signature: Of course all the best things in life have liability so sign the waiver here.
3. SOAK!: Bring your swimsuit, towel and soak in the exhibition (pun intended).
|
|
|
Two spots are always reserved for the artists who may drop in and chat.
Please note children under 5 are not permitted in the hot tub and children 6-17 must be accompanied by an adult. Please consult a physician before using the hot tub if you have any medical conditions or are pregnant.
