FREE COMIC BOOK DAY

Are you thinking of hosting an FCBD program at your library this year? We encourage all libraries to partner with their local comic shops for this fan-tastic yearly celebration! Collaborating with your LCS fosters a stronger comics community. It creates a mutually beneficial relationship that can last for years and extend to a myriad of other events! If, however, you are a library that is, unfortunately, not able to find a local comic shop to participate (either because there is not one within a reasonable distance to your library location, your local comic shop is opting not to participate themselves, etc.), you can still take part!
Libraries can participate in the festivities on their own by signing up HERE.
But act now because the registration deadline is JANUARY 31st.

Have additional questions about participating? You can mail FCBD directly at: educators@freecomicbookday.com!
As always, you can arrange creator visits and offer feedback, as well as request digital and physical review copies, programming advice and assistance, and materials donations via email at the address listed below:

SEA OF STARS

AUTHOR: Dennis Hallum & Jason Aaron
ARTIST: Stephen Green & Rico Renzi
AGE RANGE: T - Teen (13+)
SERIES TYPE: Ongoing Series

COLLECTED AS: SEA OF STARS, VOL. 1 TP
FORMAT: Paperback; 120 Pages
PUBLICATION DATE: Jan. 29, 2020
ISBN: 9781534314955
DIAMOND CODE: OCT190059

SUMMARY: Being a space trucker may sound like a cool job, but in reality it can be boring as hell. So when recently widowed Gil gets a long-haul gig across the universe, he figures it’s safe enough to bring his young son Kadyn along for the ride. But when their “big rig” gets bitten in half by a gigantic Space Leviathan, Gil is separated from his young son—with a breached suit that’s venting oxygen at an alarming rate. He’ll have to defy the odds and stay alive long enough to rescue Kadyn. But Kadyn seems to be getting all the help he needs from a talking Space Monkey riding a Space Dolphin… or maybe it’s the strange powers he’s suddenly manifesting. From the writing duo of JASON AARON (SOUTHERN BASTARDS, Thor) and DENNIS HALLUM (Cloak & Dagger, Vader: Dark Visions), with dazzling art by STEPHEN GREEN (Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.) and cosmic colors by RICO RENZI (Spider-Gwen) comes an intense, galaxy-spanning adventure with all the scope and heart of the The Neverending Story crossed with the imaginative weirdness of Hayao Miyazaki.

“This is an adventure on two fronts. A father and son get separated in the deep wilds of space, when something big and scary and mysterious attacks their spaceship. The kid soon finds himself somehow soaring between the stars under his own power, with some talking space animals as his sidekicks, on a fun journey through the wondrous depths of space. Meanwhile, the dad is going through sci-fi hell to chase after his boy. If the kid is on a Miyazaki adventure, the dad finds himself trapped inside The Revenant in space.”–Jason Aaron

DIAMOND CODE: DEC190084

SUMMARY: 2024: the world has been mass-doxxed, and the internet is only for porn. Every email, photo, and document ever sent rains down out of the cloud, and only a fool would send a secret over the web. This is the era of the “Paper Jockeys”: armed couriers with a briefcase of secrets who’ll get your sensitive information around the globe or die trying. Human punching bag Jack McGinnis and his partner Oona are two of the best couriers in the business. For a price, they’ll move your sensitive information where it needs to go as they fight off fascists, criminals, and spies. From new star DAVID O’SULLIVAN and GERRY DUGGAN, writer of Deadpool and Uncanny Avengers.

“I’ve always laughed about the concept of cloud computing. I use it, it’s a tool. But clouds don’t just hold water, they also shower it down. It was just a “What if” that lead to dozens of interesting questions for David and I to explore. We have so many fun stories, including ones starring characters that we’ve not even been able to introduce yet. I could collaborate on ANALOG with David for at least a couple more years.”–Gerry Duggan

LIBRARY SPOTLIGHT

In this month's Library Spotlight, we're excited to feature the Metropolitan Library System in Oklahoma City, OK! In May, 2019, the Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library hosted it's second annual Geek Con! a family friendly, event-packed mini-con! Image Comics was thrilled to be able to send donations for their event! Thanks to Kimberly Ann Edwards and her fellow staff for letting us collaborate on such a fun event. We can't wait to see what 2020 brings and we look forward to supporting their efforts with creator visits and donations in the future!

"Downtown Library’s Geek Con 2019—The Downtown Library held its second mini-con on Saturday, May 18th, 2019. Geek Con was an all ages event that lasted from 10 am to 4 pm and was held on the 1st (the Atrium and Children’s area) and 4th floors of the library. There were a few changes implemented for this year's con, we utilized the 1st and 4th floors, increasing the exhibitors/vendors from last years 8 to 17. This encouraged library customers who were only coming in for a quick library visit to stay longer because they saw that an event was going on. What makes the results of the day so amazing is that the weather was horrendous (heavy rains and torrential winds), with a few vendors opting not to attend because it was so bad.

In the Children's area, we presented Geek Con storytime, two crafts (Fakemon Creations & Perler Beads) and face painting (provided by library employees).

We had an improv performance from the local improv group Take 1—it was very successful with an attendance of 70.

Personal Sketches—Two of our teen volunteers provided their artistic talents to draw sketches for some of our attendees.

Exhibitor/Creator Alley—We had a wide variety of exhibitors/vendors, 17 in total. We had a few vendors return from last year such as JediOKC, The Oklahoma Ghostbusters, and local artist Nathanael Nalley and new vendors like SoonerCon and Penny Candy Books. I wanted to make sure that Summer Reading was promoted, and our Education & Programming Services had a table on the first floor to promote Summer Reading/Teen Volunteers.

Panels—We only had three panels compared to five panels last year, but they were decently attended (average 15 per panel). I expected more people in the Game of Thrones panel, but after talking with some of the attendees, I realized that it was more of an Anime/Manga crowd and not a Game of Thrones crowd.

One of our more popalar offerings was the Board Game Demos with TBD, Inc. I was contacted by the creator of the board game “Mixed Company” and she suggested doing board game demos. It was very popular with the attendees with an average of 10—15 in the room playing a board game every hour.

The Cosplay Contest was very successful. We had at least 25 contestants (total attendance was 80) and prizes were donated to us by many of the Vendors including SoonerCon, which donated weekend passes to SoonerCon 28 in Norman in June.

We had great marketing for Geek Con, with our Facebook Event page and eye-catching poster.

I must mention how great it was to have an onsite cafe. I talked to D Taino bakery a week or two before the con to let them know that they might get a surge of customers. It allowed Geek Con attendees to stay on site instead of going off site to get food. All in all, it was a very successful day."

Send us your events for a chance to be featured in future editions!
