KCLG Landcare eNews - Jan & Feb 2020

KCLG incorporates Landcare sub-Groups Upper Kiewa, Kergunyah-Gundowring, Kiewa-Bonegilla and independent Groups Baranduda and Yackandandah Creek.

Hello Landcarers,

What a hot, smoky and unsettling way to start the new year, and perhaps an insight into what sort of summers we can prepare for into the future. From the KCLG Committee and myself, we hope you have stayed safe and that there has been no personal loss within our catchment and community. Our neighbours in Corryong, Buchan, further afield in Mallacoota and other areas have really copped it and we will be endeavoring to find and promote ways that we can assist those in need. The recovery for some will be a long road.

On a brighter note, we warmly welcome our new Project Officer, Hayley Hollis to the role and if you are a landholder with Biodiversity Response Planning funding, you will no doubt be hearing from Hayley shortly about your projects. The Biodiversity Response Planning project is in the middle of its second year and this is the year we focus on rabbit control works and rabbit harbour weeds, mostly blackberry. If you have a rabbit issue and/or a blackberry issue that you would like some assistance with, please contact Hayley directly via biodiversity@kiewacatchmentlandcare.org.au

or her mobile is 0400 880 872.

If you have something to promote such as an event, planting day or other Landcare related matter, let me know and i'll include it in the next issue.

Yackandandah Creek Landcare’s regeneration site
Our Group identified a site along Yackandandah Creek (not far from the Recreation Reserve) that was in need of some help from weeds including ivy, blackberry, privet and many others. After extensive weed control and a few man hours with the Landmate crew from Beechworth Correctional Centre, the site was ready for some plants to go in. A general invitation to the community was thrown out there to get together and plant a few hundred native flora species for National Tree Day in July 2019. A recent working bee to maintain this 2019 planting site was necessitated by the dry conditions and the presence of hungry hares (and probably wallabies too). We were kindly assisted by the Yackandandah CFA and the small band of kids received fire hose training, as well as giving our seedlings a much needed drink. We have decided future plantings need to have adequately sized tree guards as the tops of many have well and truly been trimmed. We will have other working bees so if you're interested in helping please come along. Best way of keeping up with our activities is via our Facebook page Yackandandah Creek Landcare.

Biodiversity Response Planning project – do you have a rabbit or blackberry problem?
Kiewa Catchment Landcare in partnership with North East CMA has received funding for a Victorian Government Biodiversity Response Planning project , a three-year program (2018 -2021) to reduce threats to woodland birds and mammals.

Funding is now available for Kiewa Catchment landholders to assist with rabbit and woody weed control, particularly blackberry, on private property. If you (and your neighbours) have an issue with rabbits and blackberry, we would love to hear from you. Successful rabbit control requires various methods to be successful and a coordinated community effort using a number of techniques and good timing.

The Biodiversity Response Planning - Expression of Interest form can be accessed here or you can email Hayley Hollis Project Officer  at biodiversity@kiewacatchlandcare.org.au  or contact via 0400 880 872.
