Greetings, Pacific Northwest District Key Clubbers!
Can you believe that we’re only 11 days away from the DCON registration deadline?! There’s so much that happens within our district around this time of the year, and I am so looking forward to celebrating the results of our efforts at DCON in March. Something else that’s brought me a lot of joy recently is watching our incoming lieutenant governors get elected. I am eager to spend the next few months working with these leaders and helping them get connected with each of you in your respective clubs.
On that note, this update includes plenty of relevant information. The DCON registration deadline is drawing closer, which is why you can find copies of the Call to Convention, International Competition Pilot Program materials, and Kiwanis Foundation Scholarship applications in this email. Additionally, the District Project Committee recently released another helpful fundraising tool, which you can find attached in this email.

This year’s District Convention will be held in Portland, Oregon from March 20-22, 2020. For clubs to attend DCON, they will need to submit all registration materials by February 1, 2020. This includes completion of online registration and submission of contest entries found in Section C of the Call to Convention. All candidates for District Executive Office or International Endorsement must complete the required paperwork located in Section B.
If you have questions about registering for DCON 2020 or aren’t sure where to access registration materials, please consult the website listed below. Additionally, I highly recommend that all advisors and officers read through Section A of the Call to Convention in its entirety as it provides a comprehensive overview of the registration process and convention activities. Frequently Asked Questions can be located on pages 38-41 of Section A.

The District Project Committee recently released an easy-to-use, unique fundraising tool: Bingo cards! The Bingo cards attached below can be used in club newsletters or on various social media platforms. Here’s how they work:
Similar to traditional Bingo games, the goal of Thirst Project Bingo is to achieve a five-in-a-row or, better yet, a blackout formation. Usually in Bingo fundraisers, participants will post the empty Bingo card to their story on social media and ask for donations. Physical copies of Bingo cards can also be used in other contexts. Each time they receive a donation, they will repost the Bingo card with a marking over a box representing the amount donated. This is also a great opportunity to publicly recognize who contributed to your fundraiser. If you’re still confused, see my example below!

Additionally, Key Club International is launching their own Thirsty 30 campaign during the month of February, and it would be the perfect opportunity for your division to participate! We need your help to raise $60,000 dollars for the Mahlalini Region of eSwatini.

The 2019-2020 Key Club International Board has asked PNW Key Club to pilot a new competition at DCON 2020 that focuses on community initiatives. The Community Initiative Competition is an individual or group event for up to three students that awards those who develop and orally present an effective hypothetical plan to address an issue in their community. This pilot program was developed to evaluate whether or not Key Clubbers would be interested in participating in competitions that focus on the application of critical thinking skills as they relate to community service.
Materials provided by the International Board are attached to this email, including the competition information packet, sample judging questions, and scoring rubric. See those materials in this Google Drive folder. Contest participants will need to identify an issue in their community, form a plan to solve or minimize that issue, and explain how a Key Club can participate in that project or initiative. Please distribute these materials to members of your club who are interested in participating. Due to constraints on our judging capacity, students interested in entering this contest at DCON must fill out this Google Form by Saturday, February 1, 2020. A limited number of students will be asked to give a presentation on their topic at DCON. These students will be notified no later than Thursday, February 27, 2020.

Are you interested in a scholarship for higher education? Key Club members can apply for one of seven PNW Kiwanis Foundation scholarships. Apply by February 1st.

In addition to the PNW Kiwanis Foundation scholarships, Key Club members can apply for scholarships offered through the Kiwanis International Children's Fund. Most of these scholarships also have a deadline of February 1st.
