Dear <<First Name>>,

Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the oldest wines estates in Burgundy and they have been making top quality Burgundy since the late 1700's and the 2017 growing season came as a welcome relief, after numerous difficult vintages this decade.

As previously documented, the 2018 vintage had been another year of concern for producers in Burgundy, with again some minor hail early in Spring to scorching temperatures during the summer (a record in some parts of France). A period of early rain thankfully ensured water reserves were replenished and with some rare late summer rain, produced something of a small miracle in the delicate growing process. Wines are surprisingly plentiful, with good concentration (almost classic) and any concerns over high acidity seem to have been avoided.

A vintage producing wines for both short term enjoyment and, certainly for the Grand Cru's, excellent cellaring potential at prices that are broadly the same as last year.
Over the next couple of weeks we will be offering a number of excellent wines from several Burgundy producers, with a particular focus on the following -

Domaine Faiveley
Domaine William Fevre
Bouchard et Fils
David Moret
Domaine Laroche
Jean-Claude Boisset
Domaine de L'Enclos
Domaine Tortochot
Domaine Billaud Simon
Neal Martin (Vinous.com) - Vintage Notes

"You always have an inkling of how much you will enjoy tasting a new vintage. On reflection, the 2018 Burgundies exceeded my estimate.
I was taken aback at how well many of the white wines show in 2018. I was expecting heavy wines with low acid levels, viscous textures, loads of tropical fruit and short drinking windows. On the contrary, I discovered whites with surprisingly zingy acidities that impart more tension than anticipated, far fewer obvious tropical notes and far greater articulation of individual terroirs.

The 2018's are generally more energetic and, banal as it sounds, “fun” wines that are destined to give a lot of pleasure, and certainly less austere and reserved compared to their 2017 counterparts."
The 2018 vintage is well worth consideration across the board from easy drinking Reds to big, full bodied Grand Crus.
The Whites are fresh and aromatic, with the Chablis showing great minerality and Chardonnay's from the Cote-d'Or with a richness and concentration that has not always been seen in recent years.
William Kelley (Wine Advocate) - Vintage Notes

"The 2018 Whites: Historically High Yields Produce Charming and Nicely Balanced Wines
The year’s generous yields retarded ripening in Chardonnay, so alcohols are not especially elevated in the white wines of 2018. Given the extreme weather, the 2018 whites are therefore surprisingly classically balanced in profile, and while the 2017 white Burgundy vintage is as a whole superior to 2018, there are certainly several 2018s that surpass their 2017 counterparts."

"The 2018 Reds: A High-Wire Act
The ensuing 2018 red Burgundies are above average in alcohol and below average in acidity, with extremely saturated hues and an abundance of ripe tannin.
The best reds are rich, enveloping and sensuous but display none of the jammy, overripe and overtly liqueur-like qualities that mar the year’s less successful offerings."

We are therefore excited to present a number of very good producers from the 2018 En Primeur campaign, continuing with Bouchard Père & Fils and a full range of Cote du Beaune wines.

We have presented scores from William Kelley a well respected recent addition at the world renowned Wine Advocate stable of critics, including detailed tasting notes for those wines we feel represent the best value of the vintage.

Founded in 1731 in Beaune by Michel Bouchard, Bouchard Père & Fils, is one of the oldest wine estates in Burgundy, perpetuating tradition for nearly 3 centuries and 9 generations.

In 1775, Joseph Bouchard acquired his first vineyards in Volnay in the famous “Les Caillerets” climat and started to develop the family’s vineyard holdings.

During the French Revolution, property belonging to the clergy and nobility was confiscated and put up for sale. Joseph’s son, Antoine Philibert Joseph Bouchard, seized the opportunity to extend the family’s vineyard holdings in Beaune including the famous “Beaune Grèves Vigne de l’Enfant Jesus.”

In 1820 Bernard Bouchard purchased the Château de Beaune, a former royal fortress built in the 15th century by King Louis XI.
Four of the five original towers of the fortress, as well as parts of the ramparts, still stand today, and have featured on the list of historic monuments since 1937.

Over time, by acquiring various terroirs with great care and patience, Bouchard Père & Fils has built up the biggest domaine in the Côte d’Or. Today the estate boasts 130 hectares of vines, of which 12 are classed Grand Cru and 74 classed as Premier Cru.

William Kelley (Wine Advocate)

"Bouchard's Frédéric Weber was demonstrably satisfied with his 2018 portfolio, and he has every reason to be. Ripe but controlled, this is a very consistent range of fleshy but structured reds—which readers might think of as a more rounded version of the 2005 vintage—and elegant, fragrant whites."

Le Montrachet Grand Cru (blanc)
£1290.00 per 3 x 750ml (IB)

"The 2018 Montrachet Grand Cru soars from the glass with an expressive bouquet of spiced pears, orange oil, white flowers, nutmeg and pastry cream. On the palate, it's full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with a deep and concentrated core that's layered and textural, underpinned by lively balancing acids and concluding with a long, expansive finish."

Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru (blanc)
£780.00 per 3 x 750ml (IB)

not rated yet.

Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru (blanc)
£585.00 per 3 x 750ml (IB)

"The 2018 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru reveals attractive aromas of citrus oil, mandarin and pear, framed by subtle hints of fresh pastry, cut flowers and nutmeg. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with a broad attack that segues into a ripe core of nicely concentrated fruit, underpinned by lively acids. This bottling hails from the three terraces on the hillside above Bouchard's La Cabotte, their bottling from the latter—which adjoins Montrachet itself—being more muscular and powerful whereas this cuvée is finer-boned and more ethereal."
93 – 95 pts William Kelley (Wine Advocate)

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru (blanc)
£324.00 per 3 x 750ml (IB)

"The 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru exhibits aromas of confit citrus and citrus zest, complemented by notes of fresh pastry and warm bread. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, muscular and structured, with good depth and concentration. This is a Corton-Charlemagne with a promising future."
91 – 93 pts William Kelley (Wine Advocate)

Meursault Genevrières 1er Cru (blanc)
£315.00 per 6 x 750ml (IB)

"Wafting from the glass with notes of pear, white flowers, orange oil and fresh pastry, the 2018 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières is medium to full-bodied, satiny and textural, with lively acids and a long, mineral finish. Bouchard is the second-largest landowner in this premier cru and produces a very consistent cuvée."
91 – 93+ pts William Kelley (Wine Advocate)

Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru (blanc)
£348.00 per 6 x 750ml (IB)

"The 2018 Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières unwinds in the glass with a crisp bouquet of citrus oil, crushed chalk and nutmeg, followed by a medium to full-bodied, racy and incisive palate that's tight-knit, tensile and mineral. Even in this generally forward white Burgundy vintage, this will need and reward bottle age."
92 – 94 pts William Kelley (Wine Advocate)

Beaune du Chateau 1er Cru (blanc)
£135.00 per 6 x 750ml (IB)

88 – 90 pts William Kelley (Wine Advocate)

Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru
£699.00 per 3 x 750ml (IB)

89 – 91 pts (?) William Kelley (Wine Advocate)

Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
£675.00 per 3 x 750ml (IB)

"The high point of Bouchard's red portfolio this year is surely the 2018 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru, a striking wine that unfurls in the glass with aromas of raspberries, cherries and wild blueberries mingled with suggestions of rose petals, grilled squab, incense and dark chocolate. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a multidimensional core, lively acids and a long, notably intense finish. This is a small cuvée, derived from an elongated, 25-are parcel, but it will be well worth the effort to seek out."
94 – 96 pts William Kelley (Wine Advocate)

Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
£399.00 per 3 x 750ml (IB)

"The 2018 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, from Bouchard's domaine holdings—and only their holdings in the upper part of the vineyard, as the lower-lying plots are being replanted—reveals aromas of raspberries, red cherries, spices and rose petals, deftly framed by new oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, firm and compact; indeed, the wine was quite introverted when I tasted it, so it may well have been out of sorts."
90 – 92+ pts (?) William Kelley (Wine Advocate)

Beaune Greves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus 1er Cru
£385.00 per 6 x 750ml (IB)

"The 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus is a promising bottle in the making, offering up a deep bouquet of dark berry fruit, dried flowers, dark chocolate, espresso roast and toasty new oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a muscular core of fruit, ripe tannins and a long, expansive finish. Weber observes that analytically this is very similar indeed to the 1947 vintage of l'Enfant Jesus, and that wine is certainly drinking brilliantly today."
92 – 94 pts William Kelley (Wine Advocate)

Pommard Les Rugiens 1er Cru
£315.00 per 6 x 750ml (IB)

"The 2018 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens reveals an incipiently complex bouquet of cherries, red berries, licorice, espresso roast and forest floor. It has a medium to full-bodied and ripe but succulent palate that's muscular and enveloping, with its generous core of fruit partially concealing a firm chassis of tannin. This, like the Pezerolles that preceded it, will demand some bottle age."
91 – 93+ pts William Kelley (Wine Advocate)

Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru
£300.00 per 6 x 750ml (IB)

"Another of the high points of this year's range is the 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot, a promising wine offering up scents of cassis, wild berries, rich soil tones, smoke and a deft framing of toasty new oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and enveloping, with more flesh on its elegant, structural bones than the Taillepieds, but similarly lively acidity."
92 – 94 pts William Kelley (Wine Advocate)

Monthelie Clos des Champs Fulliot 1er Cru
£144.00 per 6 x 750ml (IB)

88 – 90+ pts William Kelley (Wine Advocate)

Beaune du Chateau 1er Cru
£135.00 per 6 x 750ml (IB)
