 Christmas is now a distant memory and I wonder how many of us are sticking to those New Year’s resolutions? Those doing ‘dry’ January or ‘veganuary’ you are a whole 3 weeks in, and whether you are finding it hard to resist temptation or it’s a breeze, 2020 is certainly well under way.
So what do we know of the year before us? Well, Brexit – we are likely to see Royal Assent to the Withdrawal Bill soon – we will be leaving on 31 January and Mr Johnson and his team will then be facing the transition period to get all our ‘ducks in a row’ before the end of December this year – so certainly a busy time. I sincerely hope that doesn’t (continue to) deflect the focus that is needed on our ‘domestic policy’ shall we say. Continue reading...

National Living Wage
The Government has announced the National Living Wage increases from April 2020 and although this increase is welcomed, there are concerns that Local Authorities will not have adequate government funding to cover the increase in staff cost in social care contracts, which is crucial to their survival.
In this article in Community Care, ADASS President, Julie Ogley, said, “If [the] government does not provide additional funding, then this will further destabilise already fragile care markets with a clear impact on those of us who need care and support.”

 Skills for Care Accolades 2020 Announced
Skills for Care have announced the finalists for their 17th Accolades Awards, celebrating excellence and innovation in workforce development across adult social care in England.
ARC England Director, Lisa Lenton, one of the judges for this year's Awards, will be attending the Awards ceremony on 22 January. She said, "The Accolades are a great way of celebrating the good and innovative work that goes on within adult social care, and shows the importance of the learning and development of the workforce. It's great to see that the entries were of a very high standards again this year."

 Trial Skills for Care's new support materials for the Care Certificate
Skills for Care have been working with the sector to develop additional resources to support the delivery and achievement of the Care Certificate across the specialisms of learning disability, dementia, mental health and lone working. They are looking for providers to test and feedback on the resources throughout the month of February 2020.

 Specialist Care Provider Updates Brand for New Era
The Richardson Partnership for Care, a specialist provider of rehabilitation and residential care for adults with acquired brain injury or learning disabilities in Northampton, has launched a new brand and website. It will now be known as Richardson Care.

Distance Learning Pack and Workbook
We are delighted to launch our new Independent Advocacy Level 2 Award Distance Learning Pack and accompanying Workbook.
The distance learning pack is ideal for anyone wanting to understand the basic principles of independent advocacy and its role, or if you are interested in becoming a volunteer advocate, you work alongside or use advocacy services, or if it is a part of your wider current role, for example, as a support worker, health and social care professional or social worker, and you want to learn and understand more.
It is in an easy to follow format, including activities, scenarios and handouts, to help consolidate your knowledge and understanding whilst taking you through the learning outcomes of the award, with the support of your personally allocated assessor.
Learning outcomes:
- Understand the principles of Independent Advocacy
- Understand the role of the Independent Advocate
- Understand communication methods used in Independent Advocacy
- Understand equality, diversity and inclusion
Workbook Assessment:
We have developed a workbook for you to complete once you have worked through the distance learning materials, which you need to submit for formal assessment to your assessor. On its successful completion, you will have achieved your Level 2 Award in Independent Advocacy qualification and receive your City & Guilds accredited qualification and certificate.
