Introducing the New Director of instructor Training for The Carpentries
Thanks to funding from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Karen Word, previously the Deputy Director of Instructor Training, will now serve as Director of Instructor Training at The Carpentries. In this new position, she will work alongside the Deputy Director of Instructor Training (hiring underway) and will oversee a major expansion to this program. Join The Carpentries Team: Send Your Application For The Executive Director Role!
The Carpentries seeks its next Executive Director to spearhead the organisation’s vision of becoming the leading inclusive community teaching data and coding skills. We bade goodbye to Tracy Teal, the former Executive Director, on December 31, 2019. Senior Director of Equity and Assessment Kari L. Jordan is serving as Acting Executive Director for The Carpentries until the next Executive Director is hired. The Executive Council is working with the non-profit division of Marcum LLP to conduct the search. This position is remote, so all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply, regardless of location. CarpentryConnect Events in 2020
In addition to our global community conference, CarpentryCon 2020, which is scheduled for June 2020 in Madison, three regional community events will be held in 2020.These regional Carpentries community events planned for this year are: CarpentryConnect Dunedin (New Zealand) on February 11 2020, CarpentryConnect DC (USA) on May 12 2020 (join the organization committee), which will be held a day before csv,conf,v5 conference and CarpentryConnect Germany 2020 (date and venue to be announced). These events are inspired by CarpentryCon 2018 and three CarpentryConnect events that were successfully held in Dublin (Ireland), UC Davis (USA), Johannesburg (South Africa) and Manchester (UK). Committee and Task Force News
Instructor Training Team
At their first set of Carpentries Trainers meetings this year, the Instructor Training Team held an "open mic" where members from around our global and virtual communities shared their updates. This resulted in useful conversations at both the calls, which also facilitated many new connections. In other news, the Carpentries Trainers community now has a temporary Trainers Leadership council, tasked with establishing governance and elections within the Trainers group. Moreover, the new cohort of Trainer trainees begin their training next week! The Instructor Training Team members are excited to introduce them to the community in March, when they complete their certification.
Library Carpentry
Ariel Deardorff will be working with The Carpentries Team on a new project to develop the Carpentries community in academic libraries across California. The goal of this project is to create sustainable communities of academic libraries that can work together to make computational training more accessible to librarians and the communities that they serve. As part of this project, Ariel will be reaching out to promote the work of the Carpentries in regional library groups, piloting new membership models for library networks and consortia, assisting with Library Carpentry workshops across the state, and offering more instructor training opportunities for California librarians. If you are a librarian in California and interested in what the Carpentries can offer your library, for e.g. hosting a Library Carpentry workshop, email ariel.deardorff@ucsf.edu. Call for Session Proposals is open for csvconf,v5
csvconf.com is a community conference for data makers everywhere that features stories about data sharing and analysis from science, journalism, government, and open source. The fifth edition of csvconf will be held in Washington DC on May 13 and 14 2020. Interested in submitting a proposal for a 25 minute talk? Talk proposals will be accepted through to February 11, 2020 and a stipend to attend the conference is available for speakers that may need it. Submit your talk proposal today.
Call for Tutorial Proposals for SciPy 2020
SciPy 2020 will kick off with two days of tutorials (July 6-7) that take place before the general conference. SciPy 2020 organisers are looking for tutorial submissions that cover interesting techniques or packages, and that aim to help new or advanced Python programmers develop better or faster scientific applications. Tutorials should be focused on covering a well-defined topic in a hands-on manner. Deadline for the submission of tutorial proposals in February 11, 2020. Submit your proposals today.
Registration and Call for Proposals are open for Collaborations Workshop 2020
The Software Sustainability Institute's Collaborations Workshop 2020 (CW20) will take place from 31 March - 2 April 2020 at Queen's University Belfast, Northern Ireland and registration is now open on Eventbrite! This workshop brings together researchers, developers, innovators, managers, funders, publishers, leaders, and educators to explore best practices and the future of research software. The themes of the keynote presentations, demos, discussion groups, panel sessions, Hack Day and more at CW20 are: Open Research, Data Privacy and Software Sustainability. The call for proposals for mini-workshop and demo sessions is open until 31 January 2020, and these sessions are unique opportunities for CW20 participants and sponsors to share a particular software product, approach, standard, or other ideas relating to the workshop themes, research software and pitches for the Hack Day.

#CarpentriesConversations in 2019
#CarpentriesConversations project was launched last January and provided the community with the opportunity to learn about and discuss new developments and programs in our organisation. People from different committees volunteered to lead a discussion session on specific topics, from the Code of Conduct, to equity and diversity roadmap, burnout, and CarpentryCon 2020 planning.
