The Bishop Blogs

Each week, Bishop Gohl will be writing for our synod blog. We'll share a teaser and a link to the blog in the E-Letter. This week on the blog: Point to Jesus.

"How do we point to Jesus? There are a myriad of ways that we do that corporately as the Church, some more effective than others; and others more ineffective than helpful."

A note for treasurers

According to Pastor Dick Goodlin, who also serves as a tax preparer, there have been some recent developments of which treasurers should take note:

  1. The new business mileage rate for 2020 is 57.5 cents per mile.
  2. Beginning January 1, 2020, non-employee compensation is to be reported on 1099NEC, not 1099MISC.
  3. The parking lot tax has been repealed.
For more information about how these items affect your congregation or organization, please contact your tax professional.
Global Mission Sunday

The last Sunday of January (January 26, 2020) has been observed as Global Mission Sunday by congregations in our synod. Our synod is blessed to have official companion synod relationships with the Mara Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania, the Tampere Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Finland, and the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church. Additionally, several congregations have companion relationships with churches throughout the world. Please consider lifting up some of these relationships through prayer on that Sunday, and throughout the year. Also consider finding out more about these long-standing and wonderful relationships by contacting members of the Tanzanian and/or Estonian-Finnish Task Forces.

A note from Karen Kretschmann, Associate for Generosity, on how to make generosity a priority in 2020
Every new year is exciting! Your ability to shift the generosity culture of your church will shift the conversation at the leadership table from, "What do we have to do to survive?" to "What is God calling us to do next?" The natural result of a church that practices generosity is an abundance of life change, disciple-making, and community transformation. Yes, generosity has a financial dimension. But I believe it is spiritual before it is financial. We want to share with you five practical ways you can make generosity a priority for your church in 2020. If you'll consider each of these ideas, I think you'll find some next steps to help you live into your full ministry potential.

Let's talk about debt, baby! This is a poignant message from Rozella Haydee White about debt and shame and a need for safe space in our congregations to discuss these issues. Encouraging our congregations to offer ways to have conversations regarding finances, spending, effects of marketing on one's identity, at all stages of life.

We are Church Together! ELCA members live out this message daily whether they're gathering for worship, service, fellowship or action. Through generous gifts that start in congregational offering plates, our synods and our churchwide organization do ministry in places where no one person or congregation could go on their own. When a congregation invests in ministry through Mission Support, it commits to the work of the church around the block and around the world. We are church together! We often ask, "Where Does Your Offering Go?" Here is an important video that showcases how Mission Support dollars flow from the offering plate to synods to the churchwide organization, advancing ministry in each expression of the ELCA.
