1.  Site Plan for How to Train Your Dragon Land at Epic Universe Revealed

Universal’s Epic Universe is a new theme park being built in Orlando, located a couple miles south of the current Universal Orlando Resort. It’s expected to be made up of four themed lands, as well as a large central hub which will contain attractions of its own.
 

2.  SeaWorld San Antonio Is Opening Texas' Tallest & Fastest Wooden Coaster This Spring

If you've ever lived near a theme park, chances are you've become a big fan of rollercoasters. That is unless you're afraid of heights. This spring, a new roller coaster at SeaWorld San Antonio will be testing everyone's limits with Texas' tallest, fastest, and longest wooden coaster in the state. 
 

3.  Playland: Westchester accuses would-be manager Standard Amusements of undermining county

Westchester County accused the would-be operator of Rye Playland of undermining the county government and trying to “sabotage" Playland’s success in court papers filed this week.  
The county is trying to dissolve a 30-year contract it gave to the company Standard Amusements to run the county-owned park, but the two sides are locked in a federal bankruptcy court battle as the company aims to preserve the deal.

4.  As Sesame Place celebrates its 40th birthday, a new ride is unveiled

Sesame Place is bringing out new attractions for its 40th birthday, as well as a season-long celebration, the theme park announced Monday.  A new ride, new eatery and play-space for younger kids were all unveiled Monday, along with the park’s plans to celebrate in other ways. Located in Langhorne, the park less than an hour away from Philadelphia’s city center.

5.  Bosses at Ocean Park must pay for mess

The eight-month-old civil unrest may have been devastating for the city, but has been a godsend for the management of Ocean Park. They could not have made up a better excuse to get the government to cough up HK$10.64 billion to bail it out.

6.  Strategic Alliance Formed Between Hitachi and Disney Parks

A new strategic alliance between Hitachi and Disney Parks was announced at NEXT 2019. Hitachi Vantara announced their new alliance with Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products – the goal being to help in the advancement of Disney’s theme park innovations.

7.  Kings Island preparing for 2020: What to expect from the park this year

Taking place at the park this off-season is the expansion of the plaza at the ride’s entrance, an area formerly known as “X-Base” that has been renamed “Area 72,” Showalter said. The expansion to the area, which first opened as a sub-area of Coney Mall in 2007, includes adding a food stand and incorporating theming elements, he said.

8.  Outrage over plans to build an £85million Disney-style 'D-Day Land' theme park complete with battle re-enactments near Second World War landing beaches in France

Plans to build an £85million Disney-style 'D-Day Land' theme park close to the World War II landing beaches of northern France have caused outrage.  Hervé Morin, President of the Normandy region, said he wanted to see the tourist attraction in place for the 80th anniversary of the June 6th 1944 invasion by Allied troops.

9.  Russia will have the largest indoor amusement park in Europe

In Russia, the largest covered amusement park in Europe is being built. Dream Island in Moscow should become the Russian counterpart of Disneyland, with dozens of attractions around Hello Kitty, The Smurfs, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Hotel Transylvania. The costs are estimated at 1.35 billion euros.

10.  Mission Ferrari officially set to open on Yas Island this year

Mission Ferrari, under construction now for several years, is a Dynamic Attractions roller coaster ride that incorporates multiple dark ride effects. The launch coaster's unique non-inverting loop has been visible over the Bell'Italia track ride for some time now, eliciting speculation from fans about what else the ride will contain in its "indoor" elements.

11.  4 Disney Price Hikes To Watch Out for Right Now

Though we haven't had the "big" ticket and annual pass price hike at Walt Disney World yet (though we're guessing one or both of those will be coming in the next few weeks), Disney has been quietly raising prices on other things around the resort including dining plans, dessert parties, and even the iconic Minnie Mouse ears! If you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World in the near future, here are some of the price hikes you'll encounter. 
 

12.  Kentucky Kingdom to be featured on CBS series

A Louisville landmark will be featured on a national reality show later this week. Dippin’ Dots LLC CEO Scott Fischer is the latest chief executive to go incognito on the CBS show “Undercover Boss.” 

13.  IAAPA members get an insight into the new Mack Rides production facility in Herbolzheim

On January 17, 2020, some representatives of IAAPA (International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions) visited Mack Rides' new production site. Over a year ago, the roller coaster forge relocated part of its production to Herbolzheim. Complex vehicles are now assembled on more than 1,200 square meters, but new roller coaster rails are also welded.

14.  Knott’s 100th Boasts a Plethora of Pins

Pins? You've got a drawer full of them. You've got several ribbons hanging from your ceiling, each positively groaning with lapel-ready collectibles.  Or maybe you keep your pins in books, binders, or special cases you've had designed especially for your pin-focused passion.

15.  New event at Legoland Florida allows guests to become a ninja for the day

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Ninjago Days begin this weekend at Legoland Florida – which basically means ninjas are taking over, brick-by-brick.
 

1.  Engineering secrets of the world's tallest observation wheel Ain Dubai revealed in new documentary

Ain Dubai, which will be the world’s tallest observation wheel when it opens later this year, has been the subject of a new documentary shown on British television.  The attraction, which will open in time for Expo 2020, was featured in an episode of the series Impossible Engineering, which aired last week on channel Yesterday.

2.  Appeal launched for rejected Foster + Partner's Tulip tower in London

Foster + Partners has launched an appeal for the 300-metre-high Tulip tower, which was blocked by London's mayor Sadiq Khan last year.  The necessary papers were lodged at the City of London Corporation three days before the official six month window to appeal expired, reported Building Design.

3.  North Sea play city Wangerland will expand in 2020

In the North Sea play city in Wangerland, construction work for a new expansion of the indoor amusement park has been underway since January 2020. Smaller visitors will be able to let off steam on a new play area with colorful teddy bears in the future .

4.  5 virtual reality experiences in Genting to check out

There's a new immersive experience at the Resorts World Genting - the Sky VR, a section dedicated to exciting and exhilarating virtual reality games.  It is the company's aim to be the "destination for virtual reality experiences in Malaysia and Asia", Resorts World Genting executive vice president of leisure and hospitality Datuk Edward Holloway said in a press statement.

5.  Pig Pushed Off a Bungee Jump Tower Causes Outrage in China

Harrowing videos of a pig being tied up and shoved off a bungee tower at a theme park in China have drawn outrage, in a country where animal rights activism is a growing and relatively new phenomenon.  “This is cruelty to animals at its worst,” said Jason Baker, the vice president of international campaigns for the Asia branch of People for the Ethical Treatment for Animals.

6.  Dave & Buster’s Shenandoah, Texas is Now Open

 Dave & Buster’s has officially opened its doors in Shenandoah, Texas marking the Company’s 136th location nationwide. The restaurant and entertainment venue features over 40,000 square-feet of excitement including a combination of top-of-the-line games, a chef crafted dining menu filled with shareable snacks and multiple health conscious options, premium drink options made with fresh squeezed juices, and a state-of-the-art Sports Bar with dozens of oversized HDTVs for ideal game watching.

7.  Talent development center now at KidZania

A new “Talent Development Center“ establishment at KidZania Manila is now available to help moms discover and nurture their children’s gifts.  Promil Four’s Talent Development Center is designed to help moms determine what “jobs” fit their kids’ interests and talents as they take The Spot the Gift test alongside their kids at the establishment.

8.  Mega sports complex with inflatable dome, obstacle course to open this year

A highly-anticipated Central Jersey sports complex – complete with indoor and outdoor fields, a massive obstacle course, and an inflatable dome – will begin its phased opening in just a few months.

9.  V&A Dundee had economic impact of £75m across Scotland

V&A Dundee had an economic impact of £75 million across Scotland in its first year of opening, according to a study. The museum’s director said the figures show the value of “investing in world-class cultural centres to boost tourism and create jobs”.

10.  Britain's newest museum opening date as it plans to rewrite history

A major new exhibition on the Mayflower will acknowledge the impact of the historic voyage on Native Americans when Britain's newest museum opens this spring.  Mayflower 400: Legend And Legacy at The Box in Plymouth will mark 400 years since the English ship set sail from the Devon city for America in 1620.
Waterpark / Aquatics News

1.  Approval of MOA water park delayed by disagreement over payments to mall

Bloomington leaders were hoping to sign off a month ago on a deal to build one of the nation’s largest water parks beside the Mall of America.  But the vote has been delayed in large part because the city and mall owners haven’t agreed how much mall owner Triple Five Group should be paid for its land and managing the water park. The mall proposed the water park, but its only investment — money for design costs — would be repaid if it moves forward.

2.  American Wave Machines announces new leisure destination, the LAKE

American Wave Machines, a leading wave pool, surf park and wave technology company, has announced a project with Flatwater Companies in Chesterfield County, Virginia. The LAKE will offer world-class surfing alongside retail and entertainment facilities. 

3.  Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park Closed January 20-22 Due to Forecasted Cold Temps

Due to forecasted cold weather, Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park is closed today, Monday, January 20th through Wednesday, January 22nd, 2020. Projected high temperatures are in the low 60’s, dipping to 57 degrees on Tuesday.  As a reminder, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park is currently closed for refurbishment.  At the time of publication, Blizzard Beach is slated to reopen on Thursday, January 23rd at 10am.

4.  Dave Andrews named General Manager at Soaky Mountain Waterpark

Wilderness Resorts and Waterparks officials today announced that Dave Andrews has been name general manager for their new 50-acre Soaky Mountain Waterpark in Sevierville, Tenn., opening summer 2020. Andrews will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations and staff for the waterpark.  

5.  PALM SPRINGS SURF CLUB TO REPLACE WET ‘N’ WILD WATERPARK

The Wet ‘n’ Wild waterpark in Palm Springs is set to re-open as a surf club as early as the end of this year. Permission for the renovation of the 21-acre site was approved in October last year and works have been underway ever since.
 
Aquarium / Zoo News

1.  The Florida Aquarium expanding as part of 25th anniversary

The Florida Aquarium has announced an expansion and enhancement project. As part of its 25th anniversary, the aquarium will undergo a 14 months of infrastructure expansion, exhibit enhancement and events.

2.  FIRST LOOK: Harry Potter-inspired dinner experience at Louisville Zoo

Christmas may be over, but it's just beginning for wizards.  The Louisville Zoo is transforming into a magical land this winter for an event series called "A Wizard's Christmas" -- tailor-made for the Harry Potter super fan.

3.  More than $85,000 raised so far for Australian animals through Cincy Shirts, Cincinnati Zoo partnership

More than $85,000 has been raised so far for Australian animals impacted by wildfires through a partnership with Cincy Shirts and the Cincinnati Zoo.  Cincy Shirts is selling a Fiona & Friends T-shirt that reads "Supporting our friends down under."

4.  Cincinnati area’s favorite hippo, Fiona, will celebrate her third birthday on Friday — there are parties

Fiona, Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden’s most famous resident, will be three years old on Friday. Voted #1 Cincinnatian for the past two years, and nominated again this year, it’s no surprise that there will be multiple parties and promotions for the premature hippo turned celebrity.

5.  Zak Morgan, Zoo and Cincinnati Pops collaborate on a Fiona song

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - The Cincinnati Zoo's superstar hippo, Fiona, is turning three on Jan. 24. A music video will be released this week that goes along with a song in her honor. It's all the work of children's musician Zak Morgan and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. Zak, along with Tim and Louise Berens, who orchestrated the song talk about putting it all together.
 

6.  ‘Courtship Tails’ tour to be held again at Ross Park Zoo

The Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park is continuing a long-standing tradition, allowing couples to spice things up for Valentine's Day.  The Courtship Tails animal mating tour will be held on Valentine's Day, and will snake through the zoo, teaching those in attendance about the mating habits of the animals on display.

7.  Bristol Zoo keeper retires after 45 years of 'job I always wanted'

Bristol Zoo's longest-serving keeper is retiring after 45 years of "the job I always wanted to do".  John Partridge formed close bonds with elephants, hand-reared pygmy hippos and said he "enjoyed every minute" of a career teachers advised him against.  He met his wife at the zoo and has cared for hundreds of animals in his time there.

8.  San Francisco Zoo holds naming contest for new koala

The San Francisco Zoo is holding an online contest to name its newest koala and it's pledging to donate the proceeds to save wildlife affected by Australia's deadly wildfires.  The San Francisco Chronicle reports the 2-year-old male arrived from the Los Angeles Zoo, where he was known as Flin. He gets to assume new identity in his new home, however, following the San Francisco Zoo's fundraising tradition of allowing donors to name new arrivals.

9.  Houston Zoo safely releases its first sea turtle of 2020 to Gulf of Mexico

 green sea turtle, named Beefcake, is back in the wild.  The turtle was found earlier this month, entangled in a fishing line in Galveston. The Houston Zoo’s veterinary team checked the turtle out before it was sent back to Galveston for a few weeks of care. Once it was healthy, it returned to the Gulf of Mexico Monday morning.

10.  Nonprofit wants to build a zoo in north Alabama

A new Facebook page with 6,900 likes, 7,100 followers and one promise: to bring a zoo to north Alabama.  WAFF 48 News talked exclusively with the man behind the social media campaign to find out how he’ll deliver and your reactions.  “This is not a proposal this is not a hypothetical, we’re bringing a zoo to north Alabama,” said Ethan Woodruff, board chairman of the North Alabama Zoological Society.
Tourism / Other News

1.  Orlando hotel market expected to be ‘firing on all cylinders’ in 2020

Paul Sexton, vice president of Orlando hotel services firm HREC Investment Advisors, tells Orlando Rising that 2020 is expected to be another stellar year for the area’s hotels with theme parks continuing to attract record number of visitors year after year.

2.  Kew Gardens hit with 4.4 million spam email attacks in 2019

The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (“RBG Kew”) has been targeted by a total of 4,430,960 spam, phishing or malware email attacks throughout 2019, according to official data collated by Nimbus Hosting. Of this figure, less than half (2,196,457) were rejected by RBG Kew’s spam filter. The data, which was obtained via the Freedom of Information (FoI) act, analysed results from January 2019 up to January 2020.
 

3.  Neon Museum Hopes Tim Burton’s “Lost Vegas” Is the First of Many Traveling Exhibits

The Tim Burton “Lost Vegas” display at the Neon Museum has been a sought-after attraction by Burton fans since it opened on Oct. 15, 2019. It’s been so popular, in fact, that it’s substantially benefited the downtown economy, and has been extended an extra two months until April 12, 2020. The Neon Museum’s CEO hopes this is just the first of many successful traveling exhibits to come.

4.  UNWTO records 1.5 billion tourism arrivals in 2019

About 1.5 billion international tourist arrivals were recorded globally by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) in 2019 – a new record. According to the first comprehensive report on global tourism numbers and trends of the new decade, the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, this represents the tenth consecutive year of growth.
