 Session Sign ups

Session sign ups
A reminder that from 1 February we will by trialing a new session sign up system, with sessions opening 48 hours before the session starts. The eagle eyed among you may have noticed our mistake in saying this would not cause a clash with any sessions happening, as Barton sign up would have opened during the Headington swim session, so to be fair to everyone both Wednesday swim sessions will open at 7.30pm on a Monday

This trial will start from February and run until the end of March when we will consult members before reviewing.
The first sessions it applies to are Headington Swim and Static Bike on Monday 3 February, which you will need to sign up for on Saturday 1 February.

You also won't be able to sign up to these sessions if you haven't renewed your membership, so to avoid missing out make sure you have signed up here

Cross Country
As per Dan's post on Facebook the next cross country race is next weekend, 2 February, and this race is the last race where we are required to provide a marshal.

As always marshals don’t have to be racers, partners, children, brother or sisters will do!

If you can help please sign up here or drop Dan an email.

Also on the subject of Cross Country we are going to try and organise lunch after the final race in Henley on 1 March so please look out for further details.

Sunday Rides
This Sunday we have three planned rides going out. Bernard Calnan will lead a steady ride of approximately 25 miles, including a coffee stop. This will be at a pace to suit the group and ideal for anyone not used to group riding and wanting to build confidence.  Dave Broadribb will again lead an Intermediate 2 ride of about 75km and Gope Walker will lead an intermediate/fast ride of around 80k. Watch out for details on our Facebook page for more information and routes and please comment on the post if you are intending on riding.

As usual leaving Oxsrad at 9.15.

Captains' Corner - This week is thanks to Andrew Thorndyke

As we move in to peak sickness season I reflect upon the last few years of serious training downtime because of being ill.  This has involved chronic sinusitis (multiple times for up to three months a go), full blast flu, colds that won't shift and general mutations of nonsense which you can't explain, but lead to awful tiredness, headaches, stomach issues etc etc.  In general, as a parent, there's clearly only one (collective) party to blame; the kids.  The diseases they bring home from school are utterly formidable and are the absolute nemesis for any consistent training regime.  Following years of collective suffering, Jacqui and I decided to invest in DNA fit, to better understand our genetic makeup and where we can make better dietary decisions for general fitness and wellness.  The 'pack' once you've paid a couple a hundred quid is sent to you in the post.  You take a swab inside your mouth and send the results off to 'the lab'.  We actually got our results through today which have come back with some pretty cool insights.

Firstly, it turns out I am genetically prone to being an endurance athlete.  So is Jacqui (she currently contesting it but I'm convinced she'll be Ironmanning in 2021).

Secondly, my body does not need so many carbs.  Apparently I will perform best with a high fat diet.

Third - I'm not so good at processing vitamin B6 and Vitamin D so to stay well I need to up my consumption of foods heavier in B6 and D vitamins

Fourth - My body is bad at phase two detoxification.  So I really need to up my intake of certain veg, preferably raw.

Fifth - Turns out, my body is rubbish at efficiently processing vitamin C; so I need more fruit in my diet to counter this

...and finally my body has a lower capacity to remove unstable molecules (free radicals) that can damage cells, so sources of anti-oxidents need to be identified and consumed immediately!

In short, I've got some mending to do.

I have until now been very comfortable blaming my petri dish kids for my getting sick alot, but it turns out that this only told part of the story.  Through putting my body through a fair amount of strain and not giving what my body specifically needs I have become susceptible to getting sick.  Who knew!?

So, the new diet starts tomorrow!

We would like to make this section as interactive as possible so please send any questions to us about anything triathlon related we would be happy to answer them (or if we can’t answer we will find someone more qualified!)  Sarah and Dan captain@oxfordtri.co.uk
