A day to remember!
Mark your calendars, Sponge's 15th Birthday Open House is on February 1st 2020. This free event will take families all over the globe with international snacks, fun-filled Spanish, Mandarin, French, Japanese and German mini-classes taught by native-speaking teachers; crafts from around the world; and paper cutting and dance performances. Happy New Year!
At the very end of the New Year celebrations in Japan on January 15th, all decorations are taken down and together with the talismans of the previous year, they are burned at the shrine. The process of Dondo Yaki is to farewell the Toshigami – the deity who was guided by the hanging of the decorations. There are a variety of tales passed down related to Dondo-Yaki: you will grow younger if you warm yourself at the fire of Dondo-Yaki, or you will stay healthy without catching a cold if you eat Mochi or rice cake.
