Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Savior Jesus Christ and proclaim to all people the Good News of his salvation, that we and the whole world may perceive the glory of his marvelous works; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

This Sunday is the third Sunday after Epiphany. Epiphanytide emphasizes manifestations: recognizing the work of God in our midst. In our Old Testament reading, the prophet Isaiah sees sees hope for those who have walked in gloom and darkness. In I Corinthians, Paul begins an appeal toward unity, that we all have been baptized into Christ Jesus. In our gospel reading, Jesus begins his public ministry with public preaching and the call of disciples, which Matthew's gospel understands to fulfill OT prophecy.

Bishop Carol Gallagher will lead in worship on Sunday, January 26th, at 10:00 am. The Rt. Reverend Carol Gallagher was the first Native American woman to be consecrated bishop in the Episcopal Church, and she now serves our own bishop as Regional Canon for Western Boston. Bishop Gallagher will preach and celebrate at 10:00 on January 26th.

Annual Meeting, Sunday, January 26th at 11:30. Following the 10:00 Eucharist and Coffee Hour on Jan. 26th, our Annual Meeting will take place in the Common Room. Everyone who calls Good Shepherd home is asked to join us as we hear from our Vestry and from the various ministries of the parish. All members in good standing are invited to vote for three new Vestry members and a new Senior Warden. Please see information about those nominated below. We will have nursery care for children during the Annual Meeting.

No 8:00 Eucharist this Sunday In consideration of the Annual Meeting and Bishop Gallagher's visit at 10:00 am, there will be no 8:00 Eucharist Sunday. It resumes Feb 2nd.

Adult Forum continues next week, taking a break for the Annual Meeting. In February, in celebration of Black History Month, we will look at various topics regarding the profound influence and leadership of African-Americans in the Episcopal Church. Join us at 11:45 in the Loring Room.

Stewardship Season coming to a close, but we need to hear from everyone. Good Shepherd 20/20: "Where there is no vision, the people perish." We still need to hear from everyone in order to reach our campaign goal of $350,000. Please make your pledge for the new year and commit to praying for our parish in the coming decade.

See you Sunday!

peace, Jay+

ANNUAL MEETING- JANUARY 26

At the Annual Meeting of the parish, we hear from all of the committees of our parish, elect new Vestry Members and a new Sr. Warden, and present the finances of the parish. Please join us this year in the Common Room at 11:30 to take part in the Annual Meeting.
On Sunday, January 26th, we welcome the Rt. Reverend Carol Gallagher to Good Shepherd as preacher and celebrant. Our Annual Meeting will follow the 10:00 Eucharist in the Common Room.

Bishop Gallagher was the first Native American woman elected as Bishop in the Episcopal Church, and she currently serves in our Diocese as the Regional Canon to the Bishop. It is an honor to welcome Bp. Gallagher to Good Shepherd!
Gillian Meek, nominated for Senior Warden

Born in London Ontario Canada, I am proud dual citizen and a product of growing up abroad.  Today I am a passionate footwear executive running the Keds brand.  My husband Jon and our kids Madison (12), Will (8) and Riva (canine) live in Waban.  I have attended Good Shepherd since landing in Waban 8 years ago and have spent the last two years on the vestry and some time in the classroom supporting Christian Education.
Melissa Bradley, nominated for Vestry

Melissa Bradley grew up in the Boston area and, after time in Washington DC and New York City, returned home and works as Associate General Counsel at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.  She lives in Waban with her husband, Jeff Horine, and their 9-year-old son, Graham.  She has been coming to Parish of the Good Shepherd for a few years and enjoys helping out with the children’s lessons.
Gretchen Friend, nominated for Vestry

I grew up in Hingham, and lived in Boston in the 60s where I was an administrative assistant to the president of a large insurance company.  Married in 1969 and moved to Newton in 1972 where my daughters (Amanda, 45 and Galen 41) attended Newton Public Schools before they were off to college.  I kept busy through my involvement with many volunteer organizations in Newton.   My daughter Galen and her husband Chris, who live in Amherst, NH, are the proud parents of Quinn, 9 and Josalyn, 7 and I often take off after church on Sundays so I can have a play-date with them up north during the afternoon.  Daughter Amanda is a nurse and lives in the South End,

Started coming to Good Shepherd at the urging of next-door neighbors Ted and Nancy Ketterer in the early 80s, was a vestry member (2006 – 8), have also been a member of the outreach committee, Altar Guild and co-chaired Applefest and the Hearts and Hands Auction several years.

Geoffrey Gilmartin, nominated for Vestry

I grew up in New York, just north of NYC and was a middle school special education teacher and white water raft guide prior to moving into the medical field as a pulmonary and critical care physician in Boston.   My wife Jessie, son Zander and daughter Bridget are all active members of Good Shepherd.  Their dog Pumpernickle is of course supportive, but, has not yet made an appearance on Sundays!  We joined Good Shepherd to provide a foundation in faith for our journey as a family and look forward to Bridget's confirmation this year as a most important next milestone.
We need the support of all parishioners to reach our goal of $350,000. If you have not yet made your pledge, please do so now.
Candlemas is February 2nd at 8:00 and 10:00 am

Candlemas, also called the Feast of the Presentation, marks forty days after the birth of Christ. Tradition holds that forty days after Christmas, Jesus was presented at the Temple by his parents and was recognized by Simeon to be "a light to enlighten the Gentiles, and the glory of Israel." The Candle Mass developed in Medieval times as an opportunity to bless candles for the rest of the winter, and the superstitions that grew from this celebration gave birth to Groundhog Day! Mark your calendars for February 2nd.
Christ is made the sure foundation
Christ the head and cornerstone
Chosen of the Lord and precious
binding all the church in one
Holy Zion's help forever
and her confidence alone.

-- the Hymnal 1982,
#518 Westminster Abbey
