Peace Good People,

The first quarter of 2020 just started, and Maryland MENTOR has already accumulated exceptional memories for the books!

Last quarter, Maryland MENTOR and ANANIZACH sat at a conference table and made a passing comment about women and girls mentoring relationships. That comment ignited the idea of possibly hosting a summit for mentoring programs catered to young girls in Maryland. We sought to ignite mentorship among women and girls in Maryland while creating a pipeline of transformative relationships, and on January 18, 2020, Elevate H.E.R.: Women and Girls Mentoring Summit became a reality.

We cannot say THANK YOU enough times to express our appreciation for all your support with our inaugural Elevate H.E.R. Summit. From our speakers who dropped gems of knowledge and advice during the panels, our program leaders and mentors who promoted this event to mentees, and our young girls who were eager to learn and network, this event could not have been a success without any of you all. Although this event was $FREE.99, as I mentioned during the summit, there is no such thing as free- this summit was made possible by our extraordinary individual donors and sponsors, including Under Armour, YMAN, Brown Advisory, Elev8 Baltimore, UMBC & Kaiser Permanente, who made our vision a reality. I would also be remiss if I did not recognize our unsung heroes, our remarkable volunteers.

We hope to see new faces at our 2nd annual Elevate H.E.R. Summit in 2021! Click here to see the amazing pics from the event!

Yours In Service,

Sara

Recent Guide From National Mentoring Partnership

The opioid epidemic impacts thousands across the country and is affecting people across gender, geography, race, and socioeconomic lines. While there are youth who are misusing opioids, they are using alcohol and marijuana more frequently. The opioid epidemic appears to most commonly be impacting youth in the form of the trauma they experience due to a parent, caregiver, or loved one struggling with or dying as a result of drug misuse. As mentors and caring adults in their lives, we are positioned to offer them timely support as they maneuver these difficult situations. This epidemic permeates families, schools, and communities in ways that require caring adults to become informed regarding drugs and how they impact youth and their families and to sharpen skills on effective approaches to mentoring impacted youth.
