UNIVISION AND FIU CREATE TRAINING & EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM FOR JOURNALISM + MEDIA STUDENTS

FIU Journalism + Media celebrated the official opening ceremony of the newly implemented Univision Students Training & Employment Program (STEP) at the Univision Studios in Doral, FL on Monday, Jan. 13.

Offered in collaboration with Univision University, the Univision STEP Capstone Practicum Semester provides FIU Journalism + Media students the opportunity to train with journalism and media professionals who manage the day-to-day business of Univision and gain on-the-job experience while completing program requirements for their degrees.

“The journalism and media department at FIU is all about ensuring our students have access to experiential learning,” said Brian Schriner, Dean of the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA). “We firmly believe that the best way for our students to become successful journalists is to learn by doing. There’s no better place for them to learn the ethics, the research or the content production they need than working side-by-side with FIU and Univision.”

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

EXCEPTIONAL ALUMNI: GIANNA DIBARTOLOMEO

What does a typical day for you look like?
That’s the beauty of this career — every day brings something new. It keeps things exciting! Like today, I’m going on-site for a logistics walk-through before for an upcoming mural project. On another day, I’m busy working in my studio on a piece for a show. Other days, I can be found filming and editing a video, meeting new clients, or on my computer preparing a project proposal package. I never get bored!

How does your job connect back to your coursework?
Essentially, the coursework at FIU challenges students to find creative solutions to problems, think outside the box, and most importantly, think for themselves. I find that in my career (and in life in general) I am constantly being challenged to do just those things.

THEATRE ALUMNUS’S WORLD PREMIERE PLAY SHINES A LIGHT ON FIRST GENERATION CUBAN-AMERICANS

Four years ago, FIU Theatre alumnus Michael Leon saw a Broadway play that changed his life – just not in the way he had hoped. The play featured a cast of Latino actors and Leon entered the theatre eager to see his people represented on stage. By the end of the show, he was aggravated.

“I felt like it was a show that was meant for white audiences, to satisfy the way they view us,” recalls Leon. “It made me angry and I just started to write.”

Leon’s desire to see his people authentically represented on stage has blossomed into a world premiere production of his new play, The Cubans, which is set to hit the Miami New Drama stage this weekend at the Colony Theatre in Miami Beach.

When Christy returns to Miami for a family celebration, she clashes with her overbearing mother Martica over her life choices and family expectations -- until a life-shattering event forces them to confront their relationship.
