March's Monthly Presentation

Women's Suffrage

Join us on Thursday, Mar. 19, 2020 as Dr. Marcia Goldstein tells the story of the Colorado Women’s Struggle for Suffrage.

Nearly 125 years ago, Colorado women won the battle for the ballot in November, 1893. In the midst of severe economic depression, the rallying cry of “Let the Women Vote!”; was heard from Denver to Durango. Colorado’s astute male voters gained national attention when they approved equal suffrage by popular election for the first time in history. Many people do not know that Colorado women voted and ran for office a quarter-century before the 19th Amendment made women’s suffrage the law of the land in 1920!

Please note this is the 3rd Thursday, not our usual 2nd Thursday.

Refreshments will be served at 6:45pm with the presentation beginning at 7:00pm at the Philip S. Miller Library 100 S. Wilcox St. Castle Rock, CO 80104. For more information check out our website at www.castlerockhistoricalsociety.org or contact the Castle Rock Museum at 303-814-3164, museum@castlerockhistoricalsociety.org.

The Legends of St. Patrick

It's March, so we must talk about good ole' St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.  St. Patrick's Day started as a religious celebration in the 17th century to commemorate the life of Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. This “Feast Day” always took place on the anniversary of Patrick's death, which was believed to be March 17, 461 A.D.  This leads us to the first legend of St. Patrick - his
age.  It is said that he was 120 years old at the time of his death which is remarkable considering it was the 400's and people were lucky to live to their 30's.

There are many other legends surrounding St. Patrick and I found a few in an article in the Record Journal of Douglas County, March 15, 1918. The article mentions his most well know accomplishment, the expulsion of snakes from Ireland.  Most people know the legend to be that he chased all the snakes into the sea after they began attacking him during a 40 day fast on top of a hill.  But, the article states that his method was novel at least - he simply called all the serpents together to the top of a mountain and compelled them to swallow one another until there was none left, but as the Englishman said, that seems improbable.

One lesser known legend is how the saint became connected with the shamrock.  The article states, " When St. Patrick first began to talk to the heathen Irish of the the Trinity they did not believe him until he picked a shamrock and illustrated the doctrine by three leaves growing on one stem.  This concrete analogy appealed to the druids and most of them became Christians.

On the lighter side another legend mentioned is on a trip to England St. Patrick saw a leper who wanted to make a voyage in a certain ship, but the captain would not let him.  St. Patrick took a stone altar which had been consecrated by the pope and threw it into the water.  He then made the leper sit on the altar, which floated and kept up with the ship for the whole voyage.

Believe it or not - Happy St. Patrick's Day.
