Upcoming Webinar

A spatial analysis of factors influencing structure loss and survival resulting from the 2018 Camp Fire in Paradise, California

Date: February 19, 11AM Pacific/12PM Mountain
Presenter: Dr. Austin Troy, University of Colorado Denver
This webinar is co-hosted with the Southwest Fire Science Consortium
This presentation summarizes recent research conducted on patterns of property loss during the Camp Fire in Paradise, CA. Using logistic regression of several inspection data sets, it isolates a number of property and structural variables that predict property loss and survival. Variables that contributed to survival include construction after California’s 2008 fire-safe building code was passed, presence of multi-pane windows, enclosed eaves, and ignition resistant siding among other variables. Factors that increased chance of destruction included being a mobile home, presence of accessory/utility outbuildings, and sloped properties among others. Vegetative defensible space had an indeterminant impact. Click here to register for this webinar NOW!

New Tool: Climate-wise reforestation toolkit

Check out this web app for prioritizing reforestation efforts on forest service lands following the last drought and recent wildfire.

Due to significant levels of tree mortality during the 2012 to 2016 California drought, there is now a need to reforest in areas where much of the forest overstory has been lost. The toolkit consists of three resources that can be used individually or together to inform reforestation decisions in context of tree mortality and climate change. These tools can be used along with site visits, local knowledge, and individual management goals to aid project planning. Specifically, we hope this tool will help communicate manager’s reforestation ideas and also interactively game different scenarios with interested stakeholders, facilitating their input.
