Partnership with Wayne Action for Racial Equality

The Library is excited to partner with Wayne Action Racial Equality to create a WARE Collection within the library. The effort will carry on a long-standing WARE tradition of sharing books and other materials that underscore the WARE mission of racial justice, advocacy and community engagement.

The Project will allow WARE to revive a tradition begun early in its 35-year history. At that time, members informally circulated books important to understanding the WARE mission both internally and as a service for the greater community.  Under the management of the Cornell Migrant Program, the system of self and community education thrived. However, when the Cornell Migrant Program's social justice work was no longer supported, there was no longer anyone to manage or house a collection.

We look forward to growing the WARE collection at the library to include renowned authors of color, social justice texts, biographies about, and autobiographies by, African American, Latino, Native American and other writers representing the wide multicultural palette of literature.  Works of Adult, young adult and children's fiction as well as nonfiction will highlight the collection.

WARE and the library are co-hosting an
opening reception for the collection on Friday, February 21 at 6:00pm, and we hope many members of the community will take advantage of this opportunity to explore the collection and meet members of our community involved in WARE.

The reception is only one of the events at the library in February celebrating Black History Month. We are also partnering with WARE to offer a day-long "Cultural Humility" workshop on Saturday, February 29, run by Earl Greene. Mr. Greene has presented this important workshop around the world and across the country for many years, and we are thrilled to host it here at the library.

The award-winning novel "South of Little Rock" by local author George Rollie Adams has been called "a powerful story of race, family and small town life in the South in the 1950's" (Amazon.com). The library is holding a book a book discussion on Tuesday, February 25 at 2:00pm and welcomes the author for a visit and talk on Thursday, February 27 at 6:00pm.

Finally, we will be exploring race and civil rights in a series of films: "More Than a Month" on Monday, February 3 at 2:00pm, "I Am Not Your Negro" February 12 at 2:00pm  and "Freedom Riders" on Saturday, February 22 at 12:30pm.

You can sign up for any of these events through the library's online calendar or stop in or call the library to register.
The Library will be closed on Monday,
February 17 in observance of Presidents Day.
