RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT
Participation in Religious Activities Among Chinese International Students Before and After Coming to the US
Using data from the 2018 Purdue Survey of Chinese Students and Scholars (PSCSS 2018), this chart shows the percentage of Chinese international students and visiting scholars at a university in the Midwest who indicated at least occasional participation in religious activities before and after coming to the United States. The experience of studying in the United States is associated with major changes in religious participation: after coming to the US, respondents are far less likely to participate in ancestor worship and Buddhist activities and far more likely to participate in Protestant activities.

Before coming to the US, most respondents at least occasionally participated in ancestor worship (78%) and more than one-third participated in Buddhist activities (36%). However, since coming to the US, many fewer participate in ancestor worship (6%) and in Buddhist activities (5%). In contrast, respondents were less likely to at least occasionally participate in Protestant activities before coming to the US (14%) and considerably more likely since coming to the US (40%). There are also declines in participation in Confucian and Daoist activities after coming to the United States. These changes in religious participation among Chinese international students and visiting scholars highlights the importance of the social and geographic context for patterns of religious activity.
