As my grandfather once said, "If you stop getting better, you stop being good," so with that in mind, I'll share this quote I recently learned from William Noble, author of Conflict, Action, and Suspense. He said the beginning of a novel should contain "an event that will prove pivotal later, one or more characters who will figure prominently later on, and a writing style that will set the tone for all that follows."
