And so we go into a New Year. I'm looking forward to further growth as I re-enter the query trenches, and I've already attended a few writing workshops that have offered excellent crafting tips. As my grandfather once said, "If you stop getting better, you stop being good," so with that in mind, I'll share this quote I recently learned from William Noble, author of Conflict, Action, and Suspense. He said the beginning of a novel should contain "an event that will prove pivotal later, one or more characters who will figure prominently later on, and a writing style that will set the tone for all that follows." So without further ado, these are the authors that are setting the tone for this coming year:

Featured Authors: January 2020

January 8: Jennifer Camiccia talked about her middle grade book THE MEMORY KEEPER, patience in the publishing process, and gives a shout out to Jessica Brody and SAVE THE CAT WRITES A NOVEL.

January 15: YA author Bree Barton discussed TEARS OF FROST, the second book in the HEART OF THORNS series, shaping characters, and why it's important to talk about mental health.

January 23: Own Voices YA author Alexandra Villasante shared about THE GRIEF KEEPER and her revision process, as well as crafting emotional maps in relation to scenes.

January 28: Debut YA author Liz Lawson talked about THE LUCKY ONES, due out in April, as well as how characters can be shaped through their experiences.

From the Interview Archives:

2018: I interviewed Anna-Marie McLemore as part of an #OwnVoices profile at the UC Davis Library. Their newest novel, DARK AND DEEPEST RED, debuted on January 14, 2020.
