Dear SCPKU Friends and Supporters,
As this unprecedented health emergency caused by the coronavirus makes its way around the world, we hope that you and your families are safe and healthy. The Stanford Center at Peking University (SCPKU) went on break on January 24, gearing up to celebrate Chinese New Year like the rest of the country. Little did we know of what was soon to come.
While amidst the holidays, Wuhan City went into lockdown with the outbreak of COVID-19. By the end of January, following directions from Beijing Municipality and the Ministry of Education, PKU quickly initiated strict measures to close down the campus and extend the winter recess for faculty and students until further notice. This, of course, included SCPKU.
Everyone at SCPKU, with the exception of our security guards who have continued with their onsite work, has been following the “work from home” directive. Fortunately, our entire team has managed to stay healthy during this difficult period and is doing well. However, because of the situation related to COVID-19, SCPKU has had to either cancel or postpone planned visits by faculty and students, as well as programs that were scheduled to be held at our facility, including by Stanford’s Law School, Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society (PACs), and MediaX. Some, such as FSI’s workshop on China’s Belt and Road Initiative, were moved to the main Stanford campus (see the writeup below).
The situation regarding COVID-19 has improved significantly in China and there are signs that life is beginning to return to normal. We are hopeful that regular programs can commence during the summer. Optimistically, we have tentatively scheduled a few of the SCPKU graduate seminars for late in the summer. Obviously, this schedule is subject to change as the health situation develops, not only in China but also in the United States. Please check back on our website periodically for updates.
The SCPKU team is closely monitoring developments in the fight against COVID-19 and we all anxiously await the reopening of the PKU campus.
In the meantime, below we provide some news of events that were able to go forward.

 Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) Workshop, sponsored by SCPKU, the Center on Democracy, Development and Rule of Law (CDDRL), and APARC China Program, was held on March 2-3 at Stanford. The participants from academic and policy institutions from around the world were invited to share findings, brainstorm approaches, and spur further research on the BRI. The goal of the workshop was to gain a global perspective on the BRI, consolidate existing knowledge on this opaque topic, and determine the best methods and resources for future research.
