Two stories have dominated the media recently- the tragic death of Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter and seven others, and the Coronavirus. I was saddened by the unpredictable loss of life. With social media, the world has received details almost in real time. Many have been thinking about life and dealing with new emotions. How does one deal with grief? What happens after death? How can I make sense of these events?
In the field of cardiology, we deal with a condition known as the Broken Heart Syndrome. In this condition, intense grief can lead to surges in stress chemicals damaging the heart. Many are dealing with grief and sadness. These stories seem to have struck a chord. The details continue to surface. What should my response be? What can I share with those in need?
I want to share a Biblical prescription. Scripture is priceless, our true north, our chance to listen to God's voice.
And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there will be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying; and there shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away. - Revelation 21:4 NKJV
Even though these stories have brought sorrow and grief, we can turn to God for hope to decrease the stressful chemistry of this life. Whenever we need comforting, we have a God who loves and wants to take care of us.
Jesus, come into my life and be my Lord and Savior, wipe away my tears and sit on the throne of my heart. I want to worship you. Thank you for this promise.
