Three Recommended Podcast Episodes Every Humpday

The Super Bowl is over. Time to get your friends to listen to more podcasts. Forward this email to friends and tell them to click on this link to subscribe.
Ahh, the good ol’ road trip. Who doesn’t love ‘em?

I took my annual trip to northern VA this past weekend for my friend’s annual Super Bowl bonanza. Now that I’m in Boston, it’s a lot lengthier trip than from New Jersey. Twice as much gas but twice as many podcasts!

Unfortunately, although much more time to enjoy them, a lot less time to write about them. Let’s see what I can ram in over the next couple of hours before I have to schedule this bad boy.

Three notables:

x) I have decided to write a weekly journal (sounds better than a diary) that lays out all the good and ugly of creating my Podcast Gumbo podcast. Here’s the BTS that’s been missing in your life

y) For the last few beta months, I’ve been hanging out virtually with my friends at Repod. Repod just launched and is a podcast discovery app with a community that loves and shares their/our favorites. One of today’s Extra Hot Sauce episodes comes from a popular Repod recommendation.

z) I would be remiss in not mentioning this review for my podcast. Thank you, Ericc22, whoever you are! (Hint: Be like Ericc22.)

“Fun-sized content, that completely entertains - This is a very entertaining podcast. Perfect to guide you into knowing what to listen to next, and completely entertaining along the way. No BS, just fun banter and quality recommendations. Can’t wait for more!”

(How to Listen)

No Famine

The Skimmer’s Hook: Hash browns vs. chips. Shepherd’s pie vs. Samosas. What’s your favorite potato-based food?

Listen if you like: Lists, Starch, Powerpoint

Sidenote: When you think of tater tots, what movie do you think of first? Five points for Heathers, 1 point for Napoleon Dynamite.

More importantly, how much do you love the potato family? Enough to have thought about your five favorite ways to eat them? My friend Arielle puts up her list against host and agi-tater, Mark Steadman. Who’s right?

And since you’re asking, my top five are 1) French fries, 2) French fries, 3) French fries, 4) Potato chips, and 5) Potato sticks.

Podcast: List Envy - Top 5 ways to eat potatoes (45 mins)

Reverse That

The Skimmer’s Hook: 23andMe - A very modern dating site?

Listen if you like: DNA, NY Times, Kumar

Do you like the weekly New York Times Modern Love column of essays? Did you know it had a podcast? In the podcast, well-known personalities read those essays.

This episode is read by Kal Penn and was written by Aaron, who has a nice relationship with his daughter and the daughter’s mother. Seems natural.

Many years ago, Aaron had a sperm selloff but thanks to 23andMe, he found out he had at least ten children. After discovering one daughter, he ended up in a relationship with her mother, 11 years after she was born. Seems a little unnatural.

If you are a neanderthal, you can read the essay. But let’s face it, podcasts are much cooler.

Podcast: Modern Love - First I Met My Children, Then My Girlfriend. They’re Related. | With Kal Penn (18 mins)

CRUSH IT!

The Skimmer’s Hook: Are you underachieving? Learn how to crush it!

Listen if you like: Motivation, Parodies

Do you love motivational talks? Do you hate motivational talks? Do you love to hate motivational talks?

Previously, I have professed my love for Ronny Chieng. Sure, we share some of the same physical traits like skin color and eye geometry but that’s just the superficial. I have watched his recent Netflix special more than any other special. Ever. If you ask me for book or food recommendations, I’m coming at you with his comedy special instead.

In this special Daily Show episode, Chieng tells you how to CRUSH IT! in life.

Podcast: The Daily Show Podcast Universe - #Crushing: A Success Podcast for Winners (15 mins)

Extra Hot Sauce

As noted up top, I learned about this recommendation over on Repod. How have I never heard of this McDonald’s Monopoly scam? (24 mins)

My friends over at Bello Collective gave me the heads-up on this great Song Exploder episode about Semisonic’s Closing Time. (25 mins)

If you ever listened to the Money Tree episode of Criminal (which is one of my favorites), this is a follow up three years later. (40 mins)
