Haiti Ten Years Ago
It's been 10 years since a major earthquake hit Haiti. This earthquake, measured at a magnitude-7.0, hit Haiti at an already-difficult time. Haiti faced economic and political struggles, as well as social and equality roadblocks when the earthquake came and devastated the country. The earthquake affected nearly 3 million people; a quarter-million lost their lives. Millions were forced into make-shift shelters because of many collapsed buildings and wrecked homes. Within the year, a cholera outbreak had spread that thousands would die from.

The earthquake of 2010 was a pivotal moment. Haiti already faced many struggles and much heartache. This was the moment when we began to see just what Haiti is made of. We saw a strong people, who fight forward and continue through the struggles. They are ready and willing, and grateful, to accept help to provide for their families. Since the earthquake, Haiti has seen Hurricane Sandy and Hurricane Matthew, which have added to the recovery hardship. And yet again, they move forward with strength.

On our last trip, we saw a beautiful reminder of who Haiti is. Looking out the window on January 12, now ten years later, at the very same time the earthquake hit, we saw a bright, beautiful, reassuring sign of hope in the sky.
We know we can help. We know Haiti's strength rests in its people. And with all of us together, we know Haiti will continue to move forward.

The impluvium is complete! An impluvium is cistern-type of water collection feature. Quite a few men have worked hard on this concrete feature, which can hold up to 33,000 gallons of water.
This is especially useful because Haiti has a great rainy season. It also has a very dry season. With the impluvium and gravity-run irrigation system in place, crops will be able to grow year-round.

We struggled for a while, knowing that farmland and growing crops could be life-changing, but not knowing how it could make it through the dry season each year. We researched many options, spoke with different companies about water solutions, and connected with agronomists until we were led to the impluvium option. This is a game-changer for St. Rock! While much of the planting and production use to come to a halt for four months of the year, now it can not only continue, but continue with strength and confidence. This was no easy feat, and we are SO grateful to the donors who made this possible!

Goat Shelter
An engineer in St. Rock recently designed a shelter for the goats to provide safety at night. Then a few great men in the community built it perfectly!
In addition to safety for the goats, the shelter was designed with a slanted roof to allow rain to drain below into the newly constructed impluvium below.

How to Help This Month
- It's MAD (Make A Difference) week at a local Colorado high school and they have chosen to raise funds for Village Book Builders (check out this awesome organization HERE). We are thrilled that Village Book Builders has selected Haiti as one of their recipients for a new library! If you'd like to participate in MAD week, which will support VBB, you can make a donation via Venmo @Village-Book and be sure to mention "Haiti" in the comments!
Follow us on social media to see other ways to get involved in MAD week!
- A monetary donation is always helpful. We know sometimes it's not always possible though. Sharing Believe in Haiti on Facebook, asking a friend to join our newsletter, or even adding Believe in Haiti as your AmazonSmile recipient is ALWAYS helpful!

If your plan is for 1 year, plant rice. If your plan is for 10 years, plant trees. If your plan is for 100 years, educate children.
