Monday 10th February, 2020

Kia Ora Koutou,

It has been wonderful to see lots of smiling faces, friendships blooming and excitement of the new learning ahead as children settle into their new classroom family environments.  Many children are bravely participating in new learning and routines as well as  making great contributions to the set up of their classroom communities.  We have been fortunate with the weather and therefore are enjoying outdoor sports; including preparing for the upcoming School Cross Country.  It is a good idea to ensure suitable footwear and clothing are worn each day for physical activity.  A reminder that each class are signed up to  Seesaw which is a great App to have on your phone to see snippets and updates of learning.

We look forward to seeing you all at the Classroom Programme Information Night on Thursday February 13th.   We will run two sessions; one at 6:00pm and one at 6.30pm to ensure families with children in more than one class are able to attend both classroom info sessions.  Please feel free to come along from 5:30pm with a picnic dinner to enjoy.  We encourage at least one member of each family to attend please.  This is a great chance to meet your child/ren's teacher, hear about the upcoming learning and ask any queries.

Thank you to all those who supported our pizza Friday lunch; the pizza /juicy combo will be on offer every fortnight.   Room 6 have also made some changes to the fortnightly saveloy lunch to a 'suped up' Hot Dog.  Feedback on the online ordering form has been very positive, particularly the option to make an online payment.  Room 6 will also use the online form system for Hot Dog orders.  The first Hot Dog day will be this Friday - orders in by Wednesday (link below in the lunch options section).  Please note Subway and Sushi also start up this week and can be ordered via 'lunchonline'.

We look forward to Harold and Maria joining us on the Life Education mobile classroom bus.  Rooms 1, 2 and 4 sessions will be focussed on forming positive friendships and having empathy for others, Room 5 are learning about peer pressure and how stress effects us/ways in which to deal with it, and Room 6 'What makes a good leader?' and 'the importance of kindness'.  The children always look forward to their time on the mobile classroom with Harold.

As always, we value the importance of working together in partnership to support all our children reach their personal potential. If you have any queries, comments or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher or myself.

Have a wonderful week everyone!
Ngā mihi,
Melissa and the Bradford Team
The Week that Was ...
Room 1 have been getting to know the whānau groups and their meanings:
Koru - new learning
Manawa - heart / aroha
Pikorua - friendship
Matau - leadership and strength
Ammar, Isobel and Skyla working on their name cards in Room 2
Room 5 'spinning a yarn' on their first day together last week to find out more about each other and commonalities. In the words of one of the boys “Man, look how connected we are already and it’s only the first day!” 👍 Great minds sure think alike 😊
Room 4 were excited to learn a new maths activity using dominoes to form equations. This will now be an independent activity for them to do during maths time.
Senior Value - Week 2
Be Brave - Participate to Progress (Kia Runga Rawa).  Today the seniors looked at the importance of committing themselves to give all new things a go. School is all about stepping bravely into the unknown.  The unknown is often uncomfortable.  The braver you are, the more you learn.

Below is a background about brain development and wellbeing in children, and 2 ways we can help.  More to come next week ...

Brain development and tamariki wellbeing

There’s heaps of evidence that a loving, caring and stimulating environment grows great brains, and great people. In 2014 UNICEF brought together 16 neuroscientists to discuss the influence of early experience on brain development and function. It wasn’t just a talkfest – these discussions led to three key findings:

  1. The relationship between genes and environment is closer than we ever imagined. Genes predict our brain development but it is experience that sculpts it. The more experiences and opportunities our brain gets to grow, the better. In other words – the environment kids grow up in really matters
  2. The brain is complex – it develops overtime and is connected to every part our bodies. Different regions of the brain have distinct roles, and they don’t all develop at once. Our experiences shape how our brains develop.
  3. Early experiences matter. While brain development can continue through life, it occurs most quickly before birth and through early childhood. In the first years of life neurons in our brains form new connections at the astounding rate of 700-1000 per second – a pace that is not repeated again.

Ways you can help

Hug (a lot)

Research shows that there’s a lot to be said for a simple hug. Hugs can contribute to:

  • Security - we are simply wired to find touch reassuring
  • Positive Feelings - we release the hormone oxytocin when touched, which boosts feelings of attachment, connection, trust, and intimacy.
  • Better Health - when we are touched our heart rate, blood pressure, and levels of the harmful stress hormone cortisol are lowered
  • Freedom –giving someone a hug is something we can choose to do (that’s empowerment right there!)

Have kai with the whānau

Studies indicate manaakitanga has lots of benefits:

  • Healthier kids- when families eat together, young tamariki are more likely to prefer healthy meals and learn healthy eating habits.
  • Smarter kids- Scientists have found that when parents talk with their children during meal-times, the child is more likely to know and use more words.
  • Safer kids - eating together regularly seems to be helpful in recognising bullying /cyberbullying or issues and addressing it.
  • Happier kids - research spanning nearly 5000 teenagers has shown that when they eat with their parents regularly, they are more likely to be emotionally strong and have better mental health.
  • The moderation effect - for whānau with teenage children, regular family meals (usually dinners) are associated with reduced incidence of drug and alcohol use by the teens.
  • Connected kids - parents and children who ate regular family dinners seem to share a better relationship.

They are more honest and open with each other, and the parents are more likely to know what is happening in the child’s life.
