TENNIS ELBOW: Symptoms & Treatment

With the Australian Open on everybody's minds at the moment, we thought why not talk about tennis elbow? Although the name suggests otherwise, tennis elbow is not always caused by playing tennis!

Tennis elbow is common amongst people who perform heavy gripping, repetitive wrist movements or work with an outstretched arm. These include tennis players, golfers, musicians and manual workers.

Symptoms include:
  • Pain on the outside of the elbow
  • Exacerbated pain during gripping, squeezing, and lifting while the palm faces downwards
  • Pain occurring while arm is outstretched

Treatment of tennis elbow involves:
  • Education about the condition
  • Splinting
  • Taping
  • Movement and massage of the affected area
  • A graduated exercise program
  • Advice on activity modification to reduce the problem, such as loosening your grip on your golf club

If you feel as if you are experiencing any of these symptoms, speak to one of our lovely receptions on (03) 9458 5166, or use our online booking system

SEMINAR: Combat Hand Injuries

Last month our director, Karen Fitt, conducted a seminar on combat hand injuries in our Richmond rooms. Below are her words:

Combat sports are the new black. Striking and grappling activities inevitably result in a lot of hand, finger, and wrist injuries. Last week, the hand therapy team spent a morning analysing a selection of combat sports. The aim of the seminar was to better understand the rules, precise manoeuvres, risks, and the nature of both acute and chronic injuries of sports resulting from Brazilian Jiujitsu, Kendo, Judo, Boxing, Karate, and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).

Across our clinics, we are seeing a massive increase in these types of injuries, and for the most successful treatment outcomes of our patients, it is important for our therapists to be as informed as possible. It's no surprise that MMA is actually the fastest growing sport in the world!

ARTHRITIS MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

Introducing Melbourne Hand Rehab’s all new Arthritis Management Program. It’s especially designed to help you understand your arthritis and better manage your symptoms. As part of the program, you’ll get tips on how to optimise your hand function in daily activities, and what exercises and treatments will work best for your condition.

When and Where?

Sessions run every month and our venues alternate between our Richmond and North Essendon clinics. The program consists of two 40-minute sessions which are conducted in a small group.

What does the program cover?

As part of the program, you’ll get the low-down on:

  • What causes arthritis?
  • Why your joints hurt and what can be done about it.
  • Splinting and bracing options – you can try on the different types of splints and braces.
  • Heat and cold therapy – try them out and discover what works for you.
  • Joint protection principles and techniques (including tips on aids and equipment) and a booklet to take home.
  • Hand exercises to improve flexibility, movement and strength.
  • A supervised exercise session with the hand therapist.

Who is the program for?

These sessions are designed for anyone with arthritic symptoms in their hands or wrists, regardless of how long you have had them.
