FEATURING
WHITE WEEK
Science corner

We did a lot of interesting experiments in the science corner. Among many, we looked at the relationship between water and color and how they can migrate from one glass to an other without us touching them. Then we made lava lamps (not lava warm) from oil, food colorants, water and with a help of a effervescent tablet. We also examined the sound vibrations and we created 'guitars' with plastic bands, some could even play on these instruments. We then monitored the movement and the velocity of the water and learnt which are the quickest ways to pour the water out of the bottle. Tornado technique is definitely the winner.
We even inflated a balloon without touching by using vinegar and baking soda. The result was an explosive success. Not literally though, the kids loved it and it did not even explode after all.
We also found out that unfortunately the M&M candies despite there taste are very unhealthy. As a simple experience we dropped a few candies into the water which created beautiful color schemes giving a mixture of reaction among the students.

Finnish school

During the White Week, the teachers form the Finish school has visited our school. The originally planned  field trip had to be transformed  into classroom activity due to bad weather. This, however did not stop anyone from having a great time and learn valuable things about the forests. Our students worked in groups on topics of natural sciences and environment conservation.

COZMO robots

We can surely say they enjoyed controlling, building and programming these little robots. These robots are easy to control with remote control as well as by programming. The photos talk for themselves.

NEWS

Sharing Is Caring!

Thereafter we would like to thank the enormous amount of donations which we received from our students, their parents and our teachers. There were lots of hygiene products stacked up in the donation boxes, like soaps, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush and much more. It was a great pleasure to find lots of items in our donation boxes in the last morning as well. We delivered these items with the donated bag we received, to the organizers in their Budapest based center. With these donations our school can help the women in need, within the #notluxurybag campaign, which was organized by the Kívül Belül Boldogság Alapítvány. I am proud that the SEK Budapest International School is an extremely helpful and open community. Special thanks to Alexandra Sávay-Ádám , who didn’t just design school campaign’s poster, but who also delivered the donations, to the collection point.

Salsa

LITERATURE CORNER
What makes us human? series from our IB Students

Along with the welcoming of a new year (and decade), a new semester theme has been introduced to the 11IB Literature students : What makes us human?
The students were asked to explore this ambiguous question not only in regards to our biological make-up, but also in connection to our unique ability to put pen to paper and attempt to change the world aroud us while simultaneously defining our own existence.
Their responses were, well, ...human!

What does it mean to be human?

So, what exactly is a human? What exactly are the conditions that makes an object/animal into a human? The answer is as always; it depends. Mainly, it is dependent on the perspective on how we look at things; realistically, metaphorically, symbolically, etc. In this essay, I will be mainly tackling the topic from a society’s point of view and a figurative point of view, with the description of the responsibilities and obligations that comes with the right of being a human.

First of all, let’s look at how society defines a human. Before that, we have to know that the definition of a human was not the same throughout history. For example, slaves were treated as trading objects, rather than people. In wars, men/ soldiers were used as the food for the cannons, guns, waiting to be killed. Even today, within us, even though we do not directly classify people (that we are uncomfortable to be with) as “non-human”, we are sometimes subconsciously treating them as a thing rather than a human. In conclusion, it all comes down to one thing; the social status of oneself. However, I am not referring to the general social status, but a subjective social status. In my opinion, defining whether someone is human socially comes down to the subjective opinions of people that would to decide whether one is human or not. This can be also either collective or personal, where a group of people can decide whether someone is inhumane, or rather just one person thinking about it.

Secondly, let’s explore the way we define the conditions of being a human figuratively, mainly or solely in literature. I believe that one of the main things we should be looking at is the existence of the literary technique, “personification”. This technique helps to give inanimate objects or non-human creatures human characteristics, and in some works, they do represent humans directly. In conclusion, being a human figuratively requires mainly 2 things; the characteristics of a person, and the relevancy of the problems they are facing in their plots. For example, we can make use of the book, “Animal farm”, by George Orwell. In the plot, we are first clearly given the fact that the animals can talk, or at least made in a way that the readers can understand them. This element of being able to talk indicates that they have been personified. Later on, they start to move on to the next “problem”, which was to create a society without a human. As the plot progresses, it starts to resemble the era of communism, which was a relevant topic back when it was published. This relevancy helps to connect with the readers of that era and this also helps the characters that appear in the book be ‘more human’.

Lastly, what kind of responsibilities and obligations will be required to be fulfilled in order to be a human? Being a human can mean that you have the supremacy and better intelligence than other creatures, but this also means that you will be responsible to take care of more things, which I will list it below:

Surviving is not enough:

If you are a human, you have to know what you are living for, and have a constant existence of a goal, even if it changes regularly.

Take responsibilities of your actions

Since humans are more intelligent, this means they can do more things. However, having more freedom also comes together with pain and sorrow, and you have to be able to deal with them.

Learn to know and like yourself

If one-self hates him/herself, that person will simply have no life, while being chained in a cage they created themselves.

Be a part of something bigger than you.

In order to achieve something on a big scale, being a part of something can always help to achieve it easier. This also encourages to be more self-less, and more giving, making you a better person.

PRESCHOOL CORNER

White Week in the Preschool

Though there was a distinct lack of white in white week there was definitely no lack of fun with 13 children attending white week at the preschool. The highlights of this week has always been the field trips. This year we organised three different field trips around the theme of “Toy Evolution” with a look of toys from the past and into the future.

Our first trip was to the Hungarian House of Tradition where the children had the opportunity to make traditional toys from the past, using traditional methods. The children also played traditional games.

Our second field trip to a lego exhibition showcasing both pieces from the past and present. The children loved looking at all the different different lego masterpieces representing famous buildings from Budapest and around the world.

As this article is being written we are still preparing to get on to the bus where next week you will hear all about our trip to the futuristic Robot Cafe where the children will play with Robots and learn the basics of computer programming.

OUR SEK / IES PEERS AROUND THE WORLD
High School Hiking Club

While we just didn't have quite enough time to make it to the main summit of Noordhoek Peak, the view from our highpoint at 669m above sea level was stunning. The slog up from the parking area on Chapman's Peak drive had been relentless, and the South Easter was doing its level best to blast us off the mountainside! Despite that our group maintained a good pace and went further in our allotted time than I had hoped for, and they all deserved the short rest and glorious views over Hout Bay, Noordhoek and all the way to Muizenberg. The descent was knee-jarring, and there were a few grumbles, but it was all smiles when we arrived back at the bus. I am really impressed by the level of ability and perseverance being demonstrated by this enthusiastic group and I look forward to several more interesting walks later this term.

Making sense of weather variables with
the SEK weather station

Our School has recently acquired a weather station where our students will not only make proper weather forecasts but they will also find weather patterns throughout the year. Students will be using the station for various Science-related topics, like correlating variables from the weather station, such as temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind speed, and air pressure to insect population patterns.
