New Approach for Measuring Cartilage Mechanics
Dr. Hattie Cutcliffe writes about her recent research validating a potential new approach for measuring cartilage mechanics noninvasively in vivo  (in live human patients).

Comparison of Cartilage Mechanical Properties Measured During Creep and Recovery

Cartilage is a body tissue found in joints that is important for protecting bones and facilitating movement. Damage to cartilage tissue frequently occurs during osteoarthritis (OA), a painful disease common in the aging population.

Currently, the diagnosis of OA is difficult: it relies on x-ray findings and pain, which are not noticeable until late in the disease when it is hard to treat. If we could measure other cartilage changes that occur earlier, then we might be able to diagnose OA more readily and provide improved treatment to patients suffering from this disease. One such change that occurs in OA is the deformation, or change in size, of the cartilage during activity (such as walking or running).
