Second Hand Kit Sale Brings in Helpful Funds for GHC

Last weekend we had a great example of a club member who had an idea to help out and who made it happen.

Lucinda Frostick, whose children play in our Junior section, has set up two Second Hand kit sales so far this season.

Both sales, including last Friday night, gave people the opportunity to purchase pre-loved hockey items at low price with the proceeds going to the club. Win-win!

Efforts like this make a huge difference - making the club a nice place to be and bringing in funds to help us keep investing in a great experience for everyone.

Thank you soooooo much to Cindy for making this happen and to all who donated items for sale.

Also a huge thank you to the Nichols family who donated a whole set of Junior GK kit to the club that Abi was no longer using.

This will really make a difference to those young players wishing to try out and eventually play in goal - such an important role but GK-ing does require a lot of kit. Can't thank you enough!

Please note that if you have an idea or some energy to spare and wish to help make something happen, please get in touch with your Captain, Squad Manager, our Director of Hockey or anyone on the Management Team: board@guildfordhc.com

There is a full list of who's who with contact details here on the GHC website.

Quiz Night 2020

Also last weekend we had a fabulously fun Quiz Night that got very eggs-citing (see the GHC Twitter feed!).

Many thanks to Ali Strutt - our new GHC Social Secretary - and Dan Fox for organising the evening.

If you have any ideas or could help organise social events, please get in touch with Ali

Gondoliers Celebrate 50 Years

While the youngsters were... [spoiler alert if you are going to check the Twitter feed] cracking eggs on their heads at the club, the Gondoliers had a much more sensible get-together to celebrate 50 years (!) of GHC Gondoliers.

Yes, that's right, Peter Gordon shares with us this precious photo of the Gondoliers celebrating 50 years since the formation in 1970 of the Gondoliers team.

At least one of the players in the photo was in the first game back in 1970!

GHC Cavaliers were started this season - we look forward to someone sending InTouch a photo of them celebrating at the Dog and Pheasant in 2070!

Junior Round-up from Last Weekend

Under 10s and 12s

GHC Juniors were in force again last weekend, with many, many 7's matches including the Girls Under 10 Storm team who won four games without conceding a goal at Old Georgians (match report below).

EH Cup Matches

The Boys Under 16 Prem team had an excellent win over Wimbledon in the EH Cup Tier 1 Division 8. Having already won v Reading (7-0) and with a game still to play, the boys are second in the table on goal difference and should be through to Regional Finals taking place in April - watch this space. Good luck, boys!

The Boys Under 16 C team didn't do quite as well in their EH Cup Tier 2 Division 8 match losing to Epsom 2-4. They could still qualify for play-offs but would need to get past the GHC U16 B team who are in the same pool!

The Boys Under 14 Prem team beat Winchester 4-0 in their final EH Cup Tier 1 Division 5 match which means they top their table, undefeated having scored 24 goals and let in only 4. This qualifies them for EH Cup Tier 1 Regional Finals taking place in April. Well done!

NAGS Training Camp

Speaking of fabulous results for boys...congratulations and well done to GHC BU16 goalkeeper Ben G who progressed from the England Hockey Futures Cup selection tournament in the summer to participate in the NAGS training squad.

After further selection, Ben has been invited to the upcoming training camp taking place in the February half-term where a team will be selected to play against Ireland U16s. Fantastic news and we hope he enjoys the experience of training and playing at that level!

Fabulous Friendly

The Girls Under 16 A team took on a young Surbiton Performance team in a friendly with both teams playing some quality hockey. The teams were evenly matched and the level of play from these mostly 14 and 15 year olds bodes well for hockey in England!

Huge thanks to Guildford Business Park for sponsoring the club this season - here are the Girls Under 16s in their very fine looking Guildford Business Park sponsored shirts:

The Under 12 Girls are hosting a massive 7-a-side tournament as a warm-up to the upcoming Surrey Plate competition.

Fourteen teams (!) are coming to participate. Huge thanks and well done to Katie Stewart who leads the Under 12 Girls and who every week provides excellent opportunities for the 100+ girls in her age group to thrive. Massive job and super well done!

It is league priority date so the U14-18s have some important league matches.

Notably, the Boys Under 18s can qualify for League Finals Day with a win over Marden Russets away. Good luck to Coach Dan and the team.

Calling All Dads of U11-14 Players

Two Questions...

First - Before taxi-driving to your kids' sporting events took over your life, did you used to play football or rugby or hockey?

Mike Fitter is our Men's "Back to Hockey" (B2H) Coach; he advises that several of our Friday night B2H group - who are “lapsed” footballers/rugby players and totally new to hockey - are adapting like ducks to water.

These brave souls are having a ball and are likely to form the basis of more dads & lads hockey next season - fantastic progress and fun!

It's not too late to join this winter B2H group 8-9pm on a Friday night at GHC - better for you than sitting in the bar while your sons play!!

It is open to you all, at nil or minimal cost, and we can lend you a stick. Mums are also welcome if they are the designated Friday night hockey drivers (though you are also or otherwise welcome to join Women's B2H - details here.)

If interested in the Friday night training group either email Mike – or go and watch his group on the blue pitch near the GK training on a Friday night and approach him there for details.

Many of you will know Mike as he is / has coached our U10s & U12s boys.

Second - Saturday hockey for 13 /14 year olds – is your son interested for next season?

FYI: Mike also runs our new-this-season Cavaliers men’s Saturday side which aims to include 13 / 14 year olds, B2H dads and is tied together by some experienced players.

So far it has been a great success. Not only are the Cavaliers currently 4th in their league table, but the team has given 10 of our juniors a start to their senior hockey careers - with one player already promoted to a higher side.

We are considering extending this scheme to more juniors next season, so if your son is 13 now or will be during the 2020/21 season, and he would be interested in playing Saturday men’s hockey from the age of 13, please let us know so we can start planning!!

See the latest Cavaliers match report here.

Final First Aid Course of the 2019/20 Season

Mon 2 - Tue 3 March

Please note that the dates for our final First Aid course before the end of the league season have changed and are now:

Monday and Tuesday 2 & 3 February 2020

Each GHC team should have two qualified First Aiders.

If you will help with First Aid at GHC, the club pays 2/3 of the cost of the course (£40 cost to participants, the club plays the other 2/3). This is a two-evening course that can also be used in your workplace. Certificate is valid 3 years.

Non-GHC friends also welcome - cost of the course is £120.

Please book with AMJ directly; email Angie or Adrian:

Angela Jenkinson

Adrian Jenkinson

Or contact GHC CWO Michelle Fussell with any questions.
New First Aid Kits!

If you played at home last weekend you might have noticed the new First Aid kits for our home pitches.

Please note that there is a RED First Aid kit bag for each pitch - labelled "Blue" or "Sand". (Please don't take the green ones - which need to stay where they are on the wall.)

The team playing the first match of the day needs to collect the kit from the entrance to the bar (upstairs in the clubhouse) and take it to the pitch,

The last team to play on either pitch must return the kit to the bar at the end of the day's matches.

Please remember to complete an injury report for each injury. England Hockey collect these - the more data the better as they continue to monitor the sport along with the FIH and other NGB's for the safety of all.

Please hand in reports to Michelle Fussell or the First Aid room (first door on the left as you enter the clubhouse from outside.)

A special Thank You to Hartington Financial Consultancy Ltd whose generous sponsorship helped us replace the green First Aid boxes that had broken and update with fresh supplies.

Also, Thank You to Michelle Fussell for acquiring and organising the new bags and supplies!
