Read More

Press release: Brexit risks significantly reducing the diversity in EU institutions

Ethnic and racial minorities are already underrepresented in all EU institutions. In the European Parliament, although the 2019 elections brought a welcome increase in the numbers of racial and ethnic minorities elected, Brexit now rolls back most of the gains. According to our analysis, the United Kingdom elected the most MEPs of colour, and the number of racial and ethnic minority MEPs will now go down from 5% to 4%.

In other EU institutions also, although they do not collect data on the racial diversity of their workforce, making it difficult to know the extent of the problem, anecdotal evidence suggests that the few members of staff of racial or ethnic minority background are often from the United Kingdom.  Why your AI might be racist and what to do about it

AI expert calls for end to UK use of ‘racially biased’ algorithms
An expert on artificial intelligence has called for all algorithms that make life-changing decisions – in areas from job applications to immigration into the UK – to be halted immediately. Prof Noel Sharkey said algorithms were so “infected with biases” that their decision-making processes could not be fair or trusted. On inbuilt bias in algorithms, Sharkey said: “There are so many biases happening now, from job interviews to welfare to determining who should get bail and who should go to jail. It is quite clear that we really have to stop using decision algorithms, and I am someone who has always been very light on regulation and always believed that it stifles innovation. Read More

Challenges BUSINESS & INCLUSION

Why Diversity Training Isn’t Enough
If you’ve consumed liberal media at any point over the last two decades or so, you’re likely aware of the growing attention to (and outrage over) the lack of racial diversity in: Hollywood movies, tech, journalism, Washington, Young Adult books, modeling, college course syllabi, Forbes’s annual list of billionaires, socialist organizations, museum curators, museum exhibitions, the faces on U.S. currency, podcasts, Trump’s Cabinet, luxury brands, the cannabis industry, and so on. In a multiracial America that’s forecast to become majority minority in a few decades, critics have pointed out, it’s shameful that so many business sectors and cultural venues—and in particular, the most prestigious of them—remain disproportionately white. Black Facebook staff describe workplace racism in anonymous letter
One year after a former Facebook manager accused the company of having “a black people problem” – failing its black employees by allowing the proliferation of a hostile workplace culture — an anonymous group of tech workers at the social media giant have penned a letter in which they argue that the problem has only metastasized. “Racism, discrimination, bias, and aggression do not come from the big moments,” they write. “It’s in the small actions that mount up over time and build into a culture where we are only meant to be seen as quotas, but never heard, never acknowledged, never recognized, and never accepted.” Read More

Lack of skills, networks, motivation and finance keep female, migrant and young entrepreneurs from growing stronger
The “Missing Entrepreneurs 2019” report focuses on inclusive entrepreneurship policies. These policies aim at reaching the target groups (such as women, migrants, youth) for whom the usual barriers to start and grow a business are larger than average. The report finds that the gender gap in entrepreneurship only closes slightly, while immigrants are more likely to be self-employed than one decade ago. The report also finds that these target groups are under-represented among digital entrepreneurs due to several factors such as the absence of digital entrepreneurship role models and lack of digital skills. Read More
