Welcome to Infolink, Limerick Youth Service’s weekly newsletter/e-zine that promotes the positive contribution of young people to our communities and keeps you up to date with the latest news from Limerick Youth Service (LYS).

In this week’s edition the countdown to the Youth Factor continues, there’s a call for those who Give A ShXt to Give A Vote and LYS is honoured with the Investing In Children Award.

Investing In Children for Commission Film
A number of young people from Limerick Youth Service, Colaiste Nano Nagle, Barnardos and Jigsaw Limerick were presented with the Investing In Children Award at King’s John’s Castle recently.

The young people were honoured for their work with Tusla’s Prevention, Partnership and Family Support programme in producing a short animated film titled ‘What Is Commissioning?’

The video was developed by the young people to explain what ‘Commissioning’ means in a simple and creative way.

As part of the film-making process the young people discussed their understanding of the term commissioning, earned about its role in their lives and worked with the animation team on producing the piece and with a number of young people voicing the short film.

Speaking about the project LYS’ Tracey Lawlor said ‘the young people had an opportunity to have their voices heard and influence a resource that will be rolled out a national level.’

Tracey thanked the young people for their commitment and input to the programme and congratulated them on receiving the Investing In Children Award.

The Investing in Children is a UK initiative that promotes the human rights of young people and is presented to organisations that demonstrate dialogue with young people that leads to change.

It is the second year that LYS has received this honour with our Be Well Youth Mental Health Advisory Panel acknowledged in 2019.

Give a ShXT Give A Vote
As the people of Ireland go the polls on Saturday, February 8th Limerick Youth Service is challenging young adults who ‘give a shXt… to give a vote!’

The right to vote is a cornerstone of democracy and on an early spring day in February the young people of Ireland have an opportunity to elect representatives who will be their voice in the national parliament and/or government.,

For voters, particularly first time voters, it is important to note the following:
  • Polling stations open at 7:00am and will remain open until 22:00hrs.
  • Voter registration cards are being distributed nationwide and will have the location and booth where you can cast your vote.
  • If you have not received your card and recently registered with the Supplement to the Register of Electors, you are entitled to vote.   You will need to have identification with you such as a passport, student card, driving licence or birth certificate.
  • On arrival at the voting station you will get a voting sheet that will have photos of all the candidates in it.
  • As Ireland uses the proportional representation system you simply mark rank the candidates in order of preference, e.g. 1 for your first choice, 2 for your second etc.

Meet LYS 2020
Be Well Team: Youth Mental Health Service
East week, ‘Meet LYS’ features different groups, projects, programmes and youth spaces that are part of Limerick Youth Service.  This week we focus on our Youth Mental Health team.

Be Well, is a youth mental health service that provides counselling to young people and supports youth groups in the promotion of positive mental health and wellbeing.

The Be Well team provides guidance to parents, volunteers and those who work with young people on how to support a young person who is going through a tough time.

The team consists of two psychotherapists/councillors and a youth mental health worker with a Youth Advisory Panel (see photo above) offering their support and input.

Losing a loved one, low self-esteem, alcohol misuse, peer pressure, challenges at school, employment or relationships, are just some of the many issues that the Be Well Team can help you with.

Support is provided as needed, either with a counsellor or youth mental health worker or via ‘follow up’ with some of LYS youth groups/projects.

Raising awareness of mental wellbeing is also a key feature with the LYS team active in the Green Ribbon Campaign and Limerick Mental Health Awareness Week.
