Meet the Beacon Hill International School Global Leadership Team

Fifth graders Lina and Dalia share below about Beacon Hill's Global Leadership Team.

GLT stands for the Global Leadership Team. The GLT is a group of fifth graders at our school that volunteer to help our school based upon what our school needs and our interests. GLT members can be spotted everywhere around our school in our uniform tie dye shirts. One of the mandatory tasks of GLT is taking out compost from our school cafeteria and classrooms. GLT members get to decide which group they want to join based upon what interests them. We help a lot around our school to keep things running smoothly. We help with assemblies by making videos, being masters of ceremonies, setting up and taking down, and showing students where their class should sit. We have a school garden that we weed, water, plant food for our community and help our planet in, at the same time. We make videos to help raise awareness of global issues such a plastic in the oceans, how to sort lunch waste, and all-school expectations. GLT has a fundraising team where we partner with our school PTA for our yearly food drive for the Rainier Valley Food Bank and organize school events such as our yearly Read-A-Thon.

One of our many teams is our Beautification Team which is dedicated to making our school more beautiful. For example, picking up trash in and around our school to help keep it sparkling clean, and painting murals for our community to enjoy. Another team is the Sustainability Team that researches ways that our school community can make the world around us better – we are raising awareness of animals in danger, and things we can do to help them survive.

Lastly, we have dedicated a Yearbook team, which plans what our yearbook theme will be, what the front and back cover will look like, (student drawn), and what it will contain. This year we have the final GLT team – The Tiger Times Newspaper that highlights staff members, environmental issues, school sports, shares jokes & riddles and even has an advice column for students to ask those tough questions! All in all, this our explanation of what GLT is, and why we are proud to be members.

QFI and Duke Summer Institute

In partnership with Duke University’s Middle East Studies and Islamic Studies Centers, QFI holds an annual summer institute for U.S. primary and secondary school teachers that explores different themes about the Middle East.

During the five-day institute, teachers deepen their understanding of both the historic and modern Middle East. Participants learn from scholars and community experts, study authentic texts, and participate in experiential learning activities. You have the opportunity to learn from the other teachers attending, who are selected from different communities and grade levels across a variety of disciplines.

Throughout the institute, teachers work in groups or individually to develop curriculum or materials for classroom use. Specialists on the Middle East are available to help participants link content learned with pedagogical practice and gain resources and teaching strategies to engage students in developing new perspectives of the region.

All expenses are covered for selected participants.
