Loreto Highlights Update - 31 January 2020

Mary Ward Week
This week, pupils at Loreto Convent School have been learning about, and remembering, Mary Ward.

Mary Ward’s founding vision was to respond to God’s call for active engagement in the Church and the world. She was a woman of prayer, perseverance, courage and hope. Mary Ward’s birth date is 23rd January: Loreto Schools and IBVM Sisters celebrate Mary Ward week every year from 23rd (Birthday) to the day of her death – 30th January.
One of the greatest example of someone with a vibrant sense of ‘hope at the heart of the Church’, is probably our own Mary Ward. She suffered much at the hands of the Church leaders of her time; she was imprisoned in 1631, and ultimately would have been seen as a ‘failure’ to many at the time of her death. And yet, she came to be recognised favourably by a later Pontiff, John Paul II, and was named by him as “A Prophet of Hope”.
Can we not surely say in this year of 2020, that Mary Ward’s words….. Women in time to come will do much… have certainly come to pass?

Holocaust memorial
Head boy, Benny Hill, Head Girl, Isabel Simpson and Mrs Napoli represented Loreto at the one minute Silence to mark Holocaust Memorial Day which was observed on Monday 27 January at 12:00 noon at Commonwealth Park, by the Holocaust Memorial Plaque.

We joined Government Ministers and other dignitaries to observe the Silence in memory of those who have lost their lives victims to genocide. David Bentata recited a poem he had written for the Remembrance Day.
Forest Life
Year 1 have produced wonderful drawings of animals that live in a hot climate as part of their Geography topic.
Chess Lessons
Peter Purland visited Loreto chess club this week ahead of the junior chess championships being held this weekend, 1st and 2nd February.  Peter is one of the UK’s top chess arbiters and provided useful tips and guidelines to help the children improve their game.  We wish all those competing this weekend the very best of luck.
Sewing CPD
This week we held a sewing CPD session for staff.  Staff who attended were supported by Mr Devincenzi-Clemens and parent Mrs Peat.  An introduction into the sewing machine, including how to thread the machine and bobbin were taught and mastered with test pieces sewn.
The Tempest
Year 5 have been looking at the Tempest as part of their English and History studies.  The children have learnt about the story and the characters.
Cόrdoba Trip
Year 7 visited Cόrdoba this week on Thursday and Friday.  The children have had a wonderful time visiting historical sites around Cόrdoba, including the great Mosque-Cathedral, Patio de los Naranjos, the Jewish Quarter and Roman Bridge.

Sequencing Stars
Our Pre-School children have been learning about sequencing this week. Important to understand as this form of logical thinking helps to develop problem solving.
