This Week at Good Shepherd

Marilyn Brown
Memorial Service

O God of grace and glory, we remember before you this day our sister, Marilyn. We thank you for giving her to us, her family and friends, to know and to love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage. In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn. Give us faith to see in death the gate of eternal life, so that in quiet confidence we may continue our course on earth, until, by your call, we are reunited with those who have gone before; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

It is with sadness that we share that Marilyn Voges Brown, longtime Good Shepherd parishioner and beloved member of the Lookout Mountain and Chattanooga communities, passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2020.

A memorial service for Marilyn will be held here at Good Shepherd on Saturday, February 1, at 2:00 pm.  There will not be a visitation but a reception will follow the service in Talbird Hall.  To learn more about Marilyn's remarkable life, click here.

Please keep Marilyn's family in your prayers during this difficult time.

May Marilyn rest in peace and rise in glory.

Blessings, grace, and peace,
Robert+

The Rev. Canon Dr. Sarah Hills to Visit
Good Shepherd

Just in time to prepare ourselves for the holy season of Lent, we will be visited by The Reverend Canon Dr. Sarah Hills, Vicar of Holy Island, Lindisfarne, Northumberland (England). She will offer a spiritual retreat based on the Eucharist as Reconciliation.

Friday, February 21: Evening Retreat/presentation (exact times TBD) “Eucharist as Reconciliation” followed by wine and hors d’oeuvres
Saturday, February 22, 10:00 am - 3:00 pm: continuation of “Eucharist as Reconciliation” concluding with a Eucharist in the church
Sunday, February 23: The Rev. Canon Dr. Hills will present during the formation hour and will preach at the 8:00 and 10:30 am services.

Presentations are free, but there will be a charge for lunch on Saturday, and reservations will be required.  The retreat will be limited to 75 people across the Diocese of East Tennessee. Registration will be open to Good Shepherd parishioners first before we open it to the rest of the diocese.

Canon Hills has lived in South Africa and Northern Ireland during times of deep division within those countries. She has been involved with Church of England reconciliation projects in South Africa, Northern Ireland, Iraq, East Africa, Germany, and elsewhere, and continues to be today — for example, in South Florida and Cuba two years ago. She is connected with reconciliation ministries across the world, and is close to both Archbishop Tutu and the Archbishop of Canterbury, whom both held her previous position as Canon for Reconciliation at Coventry Cathedral.

Our theme this Lent at Good Shepherd is Well-Fed: Holy Food for a Reconciled Life. Canon Hills' weekend with us should be a great introduction to immersing ourselves in the topic.

Volunteer Opportunity

Good Shepherd’s Lent Devotion Booklet
Needs Writers!

Did you know we need 46 writers for the Lent Devotion book?!  6 full weeks of Lent plus the days between Ash Wednesday and Lent 1.  Whether you’ve contributed before or it’s brand new to you, we WANT you! This isn’t an academic exercise; it’s a sharing from the heart - another way to be the church and celebrate the possible with God.  You’ll receive one of 7 Gospel scriptures (Ash Wednesday and the 6 Sundays of Lent), an image interpreting that gospel (such as the ones sampled above), and a theme of the week.  LOTS of food for thought.

Interested? Please contact Kathleen Crevasse (kathleen@gslookout.com) if you’re willing to contribute. You’ll have two weeks to get your assignment in.
