Dear Parents,

This week marked 75 years since the liberation of Auschwitz and students and staff joined the nation in commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day on Monday. We have also been remembering those who lost their lives and learning about the Holocaust in History and English lessons throughout the week.

Recently, it has come to my attention that increasing numbers of pupils in the school community are using social media platforms. With the safeguarding and wellbeing of students front of mind, I would therefore like to reiterate the rules around using these platforms (set by the providers themselves) and provide some hopefully useful information:

  • The minimum age to open an account on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat is 13.
  • Tik-Tok is a relatively new platform, and the more information on it can be found here
  • YouTube requires account holders to be 18.  However, a 13 year-old can sign up with a parent’s permission.
  • The minimum age for using WhatsApp in the UK is now 16 years old. This link is a guide for parents to show you how to delete your child’s account (should this be necessary).

These age restrictions are in place for very good reasons.  I also feel that whilst not having outlined age restrictions, the iPhone group texting function can pose potential threat to pupils and I would ask parents to be vigilant of their children using this app. Children under the age of 13 (or 16 for WhatsApp) will often lack the emotional intelligence and maturity to stay safe.  These platforms expose them to inappropriate content, to targeted advertising and marketing, and to strangers, and are often a channel for pupils to engage in bullying. My suggestion is that parents abide by the restrictions put in place and I would recommend that you shut down your children’s social media accounts.

Lastly, I am delighted to announce that Ms Lilly Frederick will be joining our Learning Support department (part-time) from next week.  Ms Frederick has recently moved to the UK with her husband from the USA.  On completing of a degree in English Education at Boston University, Ms Frederick gained a Certificate of Advanced Study, specialising in reading from the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health, before undertaking a Masters’ in Education from Harvard Graduate School.  Her most recent post in the States was at the Carroll School, Massachusetts. We are very much looking forward to welcoming her to the team.

With best wishes,

James Stenning

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to get in touch with Dana Vivian at dana.vivian@northbridgehouse.com.

YEAR 5

CAT tests
Pupils will be sitting CAT tests (Cognitive Ability Tests) in school next week (wc 3 February). We will split the year group into 4 so that we can test Monday-Thursday. The tests take approximately two hours to complete and pupils will be given sufficient breaks in between tests. No specific preparation is needed in advance of these and results will be made available to parents after the conclusion of all of the tests, alongside a webinar from Mr LeTissier with guidance on how to interpret the results. The tests will be administered in the morning; therefore children will be taken out of lessons in order to accommodate the smooth running of the assessments. Any pupils missing from these will have the opportunity to sit them on Friday.

Residential Trip
Please see the trip letter and parent information page for our residential trip. For your child to attend, please complete this consent form and pay the £100 non-refundable deposit by 6 February using the school’s bank details found here.

Andy and The Odd Socks
Last Friday, our Year 3 – 5 students were treated to a spectacular performance by Andy Day and his band, The Odd Socks. Andy is a CBeebies presenter and is a patron for the Anti-Bullying Alliance.

Our school was chosen as one of eight schools across the UK to receive a visit from the band because of our incredible effort on Odd Socks Day. Andy also presented some students and staff with a special Kindness Award. The award recipients were all nominated by their peers or by their teachers. Well done everyone for showing fantastic support towards preventing bullying and celebrating individuality.

Games & Fixtures

Girls
All four of our Year 4 girls teams played an exceptional match against Chepstow House on Tuesday afternoon. This was their first match of the season and it was definitely a thrilling one. A special mention to the Yellow Team who won their match 4-3, with Lara T scoring a very skillful goal. We are very proud of all our Year 4 girls and loved seeing their hard work pay off.

Boys
Our Year 4 and 6 boys have enjoyed both hockey and rugby fixtures over the past week against The Hall and Wetherby Prep respectively. We were really impressed with the effort our boys put in to both fixtures, especially in trying conditions at times! A special mention must go to Sacha D in Year 5 who had not played rugby before taking on Wetherby and impressed all the coaches by making some scintillating runs! We look forward to seeing more of the same over the course of the rest of the season.

Fundraising
Mr Le Tissier's Ultra Fundraising
Tomorrow Mr Le Tissier will be running/jogging/walking 33miles of muddy hills of the North Downs Way in the Pilgrims Challenge. He is raising money for Cancer Research, a cause very close to his heart and something that effects everyone.

If you would like to help him raise money for this great cause, please donate directly to his fundraising page. JustGiving sends your donation straight to Cancer Research UK and automatically reclaims Gift Aid if you are a UK taxpayer, so your donation is worth even more.

Thank you for your support and generous donations so far!

After School Clubs
It has come to our attention that some pupils that do rugby are turning up for clubs covered in mud. With this in mind, if your child has rugby and is due to attend an after school club, especially those doing cookery club due to food hygiene, can we please ask that you provide a change of clothes so that they are able to be comfortable and clean for the club they are attending. Thank you in advance for your help.
