New INN program to provides new resources around media insurance

With support from Democracy Fund, INN has launched a new program to help you better understand your needs and opportunities in the realm of insurance. In particular, we will be focused on media liability insurance, but there will be opportunities for you to learn about other insurance as well.

Currently, INN is working with Media Risk Consultants to update all of our materials about media liability insurance. An upcoming webinar will look at how the media liability and media liability insurance landscape has changed in the wake of two key cases — Gawker media and ABC News’ pink slime lawsuit. The webinar, which will be recorded, is Feb. 5 at 2:30p ET/1:30p CT. Register today. All INN members are also eligible for their own, independent consultations with Media Risk Consultants. Representatives will work with your organization on insurance applications and/or discuss the insurance you have and what you might need. Sign up for insurance consultations on the INN services portal.

Later this year, the program will also include a survey from INN, Democracy Fund, G2 Insurance and others, to create a benchmark for insurance coverage in the nonprofit news world and determine areas of interest for future programs. If you have insurance and complete the survey, INN will provide you with a $200 stipend to help partially offset the cost of your insurance. We also will host a new online course, designed for organizational leaders and editors, created exclusively for INN members by the Poynter Institute. This is a more detailed version of the public course Poynter rolled out in the fall in conjunction with a webinar about the current state of defamation law

More webinars will be available as the year progresses; we'll keep you updated with upcoming opportunities. If you have any questions about this program, or about insurance broadly, feel free to reach out to Chief Network Officer Jonathan Kealing.

Build on NewsMatch success; wealth-screening opportunity deadline this week!

INN is offering wealth screening of up to 500 donor records per member organization for free with additional records screened at 20 cents per record. Wealth screening identifies a donor’s financial capacity to support your organization and is critical for finding and focusing on your best major gift prospects — learn more about the initiative here. If interested in the next available wealth screening opportunity, register using this form by Friday, Feb. 7. All files for registration must be submitted by next Tuesday, Feb. 11.

INN Days 2020: Pitch a cohort, reserve your room and apply to present!

Are you willing to organize and facilitate a peer group on June 15 during INN's pre-conference day? Right now, we have three closed cohorts and several open peer groups that traditionally meet at INN Days: Rural newsrooms, statehouse newsrooms and development directors. What are we missing? Help facilitiate a new cohort. Deadline is Feb. 28.

Hotels rooms are at a premium in the DC area in 2020. Don't wait — reserve your hotel room at The Westin Alexandria Old Town for INN's rate of $179 USD per night.

And a reminder: We’re looking for innovative session ideas for INN Days 2020 on June 16 and June 17 at the Westin Hotel Old Town Alexandria. We encourage sessions that engage participants, provide practical takeaways for participants and address INN's areas of focus:

  • Reaching new audiences
  • Diversity and Inclusion
  • Nonprofit Management
  • Revenue Generation
  • Community Engagement
INN Days conference presenters receive complimentary conference registration as well as travel support. The proposal deadline is Feb. 15.

INN Days is two days of intensive business training for nonprofit and independent news organizations looking to achieve growth and increase their impact, and happens ahead of IRE each year. From lessons on building relationships with donors to training in email publishing, INN Days brings together the brightest across nonprofit news. For folks interested in a typical schedule, here's the agenda from our 2019 conference.
