tonight's pick-me-ups

Things we're doing to unwind and get cozy before bed tonight:

💸 Taking on tax season like a champ. Don't break under pressure and make filing easier this year by consulting professionals in your budget, starting before you want to (we know, but just trust us), and staying organized.

🧦 Treating ourselves from head to toe. Soothe aches and pains with
the best compression socks we could find whether you're looking for support during a workout, something a little bit fancy, or just daily comfort. #cozyvibes

📚 Turning the page to enlightenment.
Trick Mirror by Jia Tolentino is a cultural commentary that shines bright in this time of defining change. Her original essays delve into topics such as self-delusion with wit, honesty, and fearlessness.

🎙️ Putting women in the spotlight.
The Women & Crime podcast entertains our true crime fascination through a study on females who have been victims of crime, those who have committed crimes, and those who work within the criminal justice system. #pagingOliviaBenson

bedtime stories

Reads when you're up late anyway. Here are tonight's round-up for every occasion:

SELF  For when comparison can fuel you ~ We pretty much engage in social comparison more than any of us care to admit (thanks, Instagram). But what if we used that 'bad' habit to actually make ourselves better? "Dissatisfaction creates energy, and that energy can be harnessed for the better. That is, if there is an unimpeded path to doing so. That means that you have to have some ability to control your own destiny rather than being buffeted about by external forces. It also means that you have to believe that if you put in the effort, it will successfully reduce (or eliminate) the difference between you and that other person. When you compare yourself to a well-matched peer at work, or someone on social media, their efforts and successes are ones that can spur you to excel."

TRENDING  For when feelings bubble up (literally) ~ FYI sparkling water is not only having a moment, it's becoming life-changing. "I seek the better-living-through-careful-capitalism that the age of online reviews offers. I get melted candles and sooty charcoal drinks. There’s only one product I’ve found that costs very little and makes me feel that goop-y, goodly nirvana, that delivers on the inane belief that I am 'clean' and, well, that gives me a feeling of both crackling pleasure and puritanism — seltzer. Violently carbonated water, more than life events or human touch, makes me feel something. It’s a feeling I chased after for a long time — that thing other women seem to get when they come home from work and put on sweats and pull their hair back and drink a glass of wine. I don’t like the taste of wine. But I wanted that feeling."

LIFESTYLE  For when messy is also your interior design inspo ~ Apartment Therapy has declared that abstract shapes (basically scribbly lines) as the pattern of 2020. Grab your pens and let them fly in your home. "We’re at all the major industry trade shows, furniture fairs, and brand press previews scouting motif, material, and color trends, so we always have a strong inkling of what’s happening in surface pattern design. And we’ve been noticing that different kinds of scribbles have been popping up in your homes, too, mainly as decorative wall treatments. Some are freeform and super bold, others are less abstract and more anatomical."

RELATIONSHIPS  For when you want to keep things transparent ~ Don't be afraid to talk to your partner about your Valentine's expectations because a slightly awkward conversation is probably much better than a night filled of disappointment. "As I look back, my boyfriend and I had unwittingly made two mistakes, per two relationship experts. My first miss? Not actually asking myself what I wanted. If I had thought about it, I would’ve realized that I wanted to be wooed, as silly as I feel admitting it. Our second mistake was not talking about the holiday in a serious way. I hadn’t thought about what I wanted, let alone what my boyfriend wanted, and neither of us had thought to ask the other. You don’t need to slyly work Valentine’s Day plans into conversations. Ask very directly, but with a sense of humor or levity."

👌 THIS WEEK'S LIFE PRO TIP 👌
When searching for recipes online and if you don't care that much about Karen's vacation during which she first tasted this AMAZING new soup, do a CTRL+F or Find in Page on mobile for the word "salt." Nobody talks about it until the actual recipe and it will skip you right to it.
