Brewery of the Month:
Greater Good Imperial Brewing Company

This month's Brewery of the Month is Greater Good Imperial Brewing Company out of nearby Worcester, MA.  We would like to thank JT Ethier, for taking the time to talk to us about Greater Good!

When did you open:  

• We have been brewing since 2016, but opened the doors of our brewery in Worcester, MA in March of 2018. 

Where can people find you: 

• We currently distribute to all of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Vermont. We are also distributing in Central and Western New York. We also sell all of our styles out of our brewery in Worester.

What is the history of the Brewery: 

• Our founder, Paul Wengender was an avid home-brewer who took his all-imperial recipes (everything over 8%) to the contract-brew level in 2016. After finding great success in Western MA and I serious desire for higher-ABV offerings, Paul chose Worcester as the permanent destination for Greater Good’s homebase. The brewery opened in 2018 and has quickly become a tourist attraction for anyone visiting Worcester or Central MA.

Do you have a philosophy behind the beers you brew: 

• Our philosophy at Greater Good is that bigger is better. We brew high-ABV beers with premium ingredients. We know that craft beer consumers are spending hard-earned money on their fresh beer, so we want them to not only get the ”bang for their buck”, but also experience a high-end beer with a ton of flavor.

What styles of beer do you prefer to brew:  

• We brew a lot of New England IPAs, given our location. But our brewers are big fans of pilsners. We recently released our first pilsner and it instantly became the staff go-to. We are definitely known for our Imperial hoppy options though.

What are your core beers:

• PULP Daddy is our most well-known beer. In 2019 it won a blind taste test comprised of Massachusetts’ top 48 rated breweries. Tasted by over 100 participants in the competition. We do have two core lines of beer. The first is called “8 is the new 5” and features all 8% IPAs of varying hop profiles. The second line is called the Passport Series and features recipes inspired by different regions of the world.

Any plans for fun/cool new beers:

• When we opened out taproom, we launched a series of beers under the name “Soul Purpose Brewing”, with the intention of brewing some funkier, lower ABV beers. That brand has taken on a life of its own and allows us to release taproom-exclusive offerings in less traditional styles.

What can we expect from Greater Good in the future:

• For 2020, Greater Good is not only ramping up its distribution network to hopefully supply beer to more of the Northeast. We have also been working with the City of Worcester to bring a second taproom to the heart of the City, branded under the Soul Purpose name. So keep your eyes peeled for not only Greater Good, but Soul Purpose Brewing also!
