The Oregon Legislature Starts Tomorrow February 3, 2020. Things move fast in the short session. Some say its too short to do big things, but we say strong climate legislation is long overdue. A major climate bill has been years in the making with work groups and task forces during and between sessions, and innumerable hearings with testimony from the public and expert witnesses. It's time for the legislature to stop fooling around.
It's Time to Pass a Strong Climate Bill in Oregon!
Climate Emergency Day of Action
February 11, 2020 at the Capitol
Rally at Noon
Join 350 Salem OR, Renew Oregon & allies from around the state to stand strong for the climate. Rally starts at Noon and other activities may take place during the day.
The fossil fuel industry and their allies are working hard to weaken SB 1530.* We need to send a message to legislators that Oregon needs a strong climate bill that will cap greenhouse gas emissions and invest in a just transition to a clean renewable energy economy for Oregon communities.
Follow the progress of SB 1530 in the legislature here
What we can do right now:
Send a message to the Senate Environment & Natural Resources Committee. Tell them to stand strong for the climate. Renew Oregon makes it easy on their website here: https://reneworegon.good.do/testimony/EMAILNOW/
(If you sent testimony for the Pre-Session Draft LC 72, please do it again. This is a whole new round of testimony)
*Opponents of climate action (aka Timber Unity) will have a raucous demonstration with caravans of log trucks and semis tying up traffic and blaring horns on February 6.
Our days to support strong climate action are the hearings on February 4 and February 8 and the Climate Emergency Rally on February 11.

OTHER LEGISLATION
#Don't Greenwash Trash
Hearing on HB 4049
Oregon State Capitol
House Committee on Energy & Environment
February 6 at 1:00 pm Hearing Room D
HB 4049 This bill would make the Covanta waste-to-energy incinerator in Marion County eligible for Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). As members of the Clean-Air Now Coalition 350 Salem OR is opposed to this measure. RECs are intended to be incentives for new clean renewable energy. The incinerator is neither new nor clean nor renewable.
Testify: For good ideas on HB 4049 to send to legislators in written testimony or in person at the hearing, go to this Action Alert from our Allies at Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility.
*If you come to the hearing, give yourself plenty of time to find parking and get there since the Timber Unity event described above* will very likely tie up traffic.
-----------
HB 4109. Introduced at the request of our allies at PCUN, the farmworkers union, this bill will phase out use of the harmful pesticide chlorpyrifos.
-----------
HB 4105 Prohibits state agencies from authorizing construction of new infrastructure for exploration, development or production of oil or gas on state-owned real property or for transportation of oil or gas across state-owned real property.
