CANBERRA DANCE THEATRE
check the 2020 timetable
CDT's had a fairly full summer break, with the December special events (Playing Up in City Walk was one), workshops and classes. And thoughts of all our friends and family affected by the bushfires have never been far away.

Now we're back with a full timetable and workshops, some new teachers, and new ideas.
We have a few changes (check the 2020 timetable)
  • Hilal Dance is now by 10 week subscription, at 6pm Tuesdays
  • Ballet Basics is now on Wednesdays at the earlier time of 6pm
  • A new trial class for dancers with disabilities called CDTribe at 5pm Thursdays. This is intended for older CDTeen dancers and others.
  • Ballet Intermediate Thursdays is now at 6.30 pm to 7.50pm, followed on by a new Pointe class Thursdays at 8pm - by request, so we need numbers to keep this going!
  • Saturday Contemporary is 3pm with Jake Kuzma
And some new teachers: Cathy Leung and Mary Henley take on ballet. Check the faculty!
Adult Ballet - no exams, competitions, uniform policy, or grading. Just the love of dance
Contemporary - Mondays with Jacqui Simmonds at 7.30 pm, Saturdays with Jake Kuzma at 2.00 pm
Introducing Cathy Leung and Mary Henley
Cathy trained in Hong Kong before dancing professionally. She takes on Monday 7.30 pm Ballet Elementary, Tuesday 10.30 am Senior ballet. More about Cathy here.

 Jake Kuzma workshop 16 Feb
Contemporary Floor Work Introduction Workshop

Jake has been using floorwork throughout his dance career and has worked with multiple professionals in the dance industry within this style. Floor work as a dance style is soft and gentle movement but also requires strength and core. It uses elements from contemporary dance, gymnastics and breakdance to travel in, out, around, and across the floor. This style challenges a dancer’s ability to relax into rolls and give attention to kinaesthetic feedback from the floor, similar to contact improvisation. Backwards rolls push up rolls and monkey slides are just a few of the many moves within this genre.

The introductory level workshop will contain drills coming down the room, technique exercises and a short dance routine. Previous dance experience isn’t necessary to participate in this workshop. Ideal clothing to wear for the workshop would be tracksuit pants and t-shirt as covered shoulders and knees help with style. Barefoot works best, no need for ballet or jazz shoes.

January Workshops
Dancers with Disabilities CDT was delighted to hold a workshop for dancers living with disabilities led by international dance artists Carol Brown and Cathy Coombs. This workshop catered for dancers from age thirteen up and created the new work 'Where the Heart Is.'
GOLD workshop Carol Brown and Cathy Coombs then went on to lead a workshop with the GOLD group to create a new work 'Emporium'. We were fortunate to have the ACT Minister for the Arts, Gordon Ramsay, attend the showing and hear Carol (pictured) describe her approach.
