While we've been working in West Philly since we hired a small group of teens as part of our Play Captain Initiative  in 2017, we're coming up on            1 year since we opened up shop at the Dornsife Center for Community Partnerships. With funding from Drexel University West Philadelphia Promise Neighborhood, we've deepened our work and our relationships in West Philadelphia, with a focus on the 19104 zip code.

We've launched two afterschool programs, Play Captains (an extension of our summer program) and also Safety Captains. Both currently serve small numbers of teens afterschool and both are paid jobs.

We also host and facilitate two professional learning communities (PLC) for staff and for directors of out-of-school time programs that are located in  and/or serve children, youth and families in the West Philadelphia Promise Neighborhood.  We currently convene more than 10 OST programs.  Since January 2019, we've convened the director's PLC 8 times and the staff's  PLC 7 times.  When surveyed last year, more than 88% of participants said the PLCs were a good use of their time, and 83% said the PLC helped them to meet other OST organizations working in the Promise Neighborhood.

Do you work in an Out-of-School Time program in the West Philadelphia Promise Neighborhood? We'd love to have you join our PLC! Contact Rebecca for more information: Rebecca@fabyouthphilly.com

What do you know about the Dornsife Center for Community Partnerships?

To Be 100% honest, we didn't know a lot about the Dornsife Center and all that it offers before we moved on to the campus. Made up of three different buildings, one of which is the former home of Science Leadership Middle School (SLAMS)- that's the building we're in- there are so many daily, weekly and monthly FREE events that you should know about.

We have partnered with the Community Health Hub to ensure that our Play Captains and Group Leaders could get their required physical and TBs shots before starting in the early childhood centers.

There is a legal clinic, a Key Spot (a computer lab), the Helms Academy,  Workforce Development training & support. The Writers Room and many more programs.

And, once a month, on the first Tuesday of every month, there is a Community Dinner that everyone is welcome to attend. It's a festive, delicious,  and communal event!

Come visit the Dornsife Center and stop by and say hello
(we're in the Ryan Hall building!)
Meet our Safety Captains!

We've recently relaunched our Safety Captains afterschool program, and we've hired 10 FAB teens. The Safety Captain Initiative is an afterschool job for teens that uses a project based learning approach to answer questions like: What makes a youth friendly neighborhood? What makes a neighborhood safe?

Learn more about the staff and the Safety Captains, themselves
via their bios on the website.

"Words Create Worlds"

You may have heard this quote attributed to Jewish philosopher Heschel -- we used it last week to spark a conversation with the nearly 30 afterschool staff of the Netter Center, working at West Philadelphia High School.  One of the goals of the 2-hour workshop was to reflect on our relationships and interactions with the young people in the afterschool program, with an emphasis on exploring the language we use when we are with, or talking about teens.
