Cultural and Personal Identity
Presented by Jacki Gordon/Norma Schafer

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 5 PM

Women in Oaxaca valley villages wear aprons. For use around the house, the aprons can be simple and functional. Those for fiestas can be over-the-top. When a visitor goes to the Sunday Tlacolula market, one sees a variety of apron designs worn by indigenous women of the region.
We will talk about indigenous textiles in general and how to discern quality. We will focus on the elaborate aprons of San Miguel del Valle, who makes them, who wears them, and why they are an important cultural marker. READ MORE.

Several embroiderers from San Miguel del Valle will join us at the presentation and offer a limited selection of what they make for sale...SO DON'T FORGET YOUR PESOS!

NOTE: There will be an Out & About Tour on Thursday, February 6 to San Miguel del Valle

Presented by Porfirio Gutierrez

MX$90 (M) MX$130 (NM)

Porfirio Gutiérrez and his family are masters of traditional Zapotec weaving and come from a long line of weavers in Teotitlán del Valle. He is among a small group of textile artisans working to preserve the use of plant and insect dyes, techniques that stretch back more than 1,000 years in the indigenous Zapotec tradition. Sr. Gutiérrez’ work has been featured at the Smithsonian and several articles about his endeavors have appeared in The New York Times.

There will be an Out & About In Oaxaca tour on Thursday, February 13 to visit Teotitlan and see the beautiful new Cultural Center and visit weaving and candle making workshops.

TALK:
THE JEWISH COMMUNITY in EARLY COLONIAL MEXICO
Presented by David Gitlitz

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 5 PM
MX$ 90 (M) MX$130 (NM)

Jews in colonial Mexico? Well, not really. They were Christians whose parents and grandparents had been Jews in late 15th-century Iberia, and who still clung to some measure of Jewish beliefs and practices here in the New world.

We know the names of about 120 practicing Jewish-Christian women and men in Mexico during the 1500s. This talk will explore who they were, where they came from, why they came, where they settled, what they did when they got here, what their religious practices were like, and what became of them. (Spoiler alert: none of them are still alive today, but traces of their culture do remain.) READ MORE.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 9 AM - 4 PM
MX$350 (M) MX$400 (NM)

Teotitlan is justly famous for the fine textile products woven there by families who have been producing their wares for generations. We will visit the home and taller of the Gutierrez family.

We will also stop at the recently opened community cultural center and visit one of the candle-making workshops in the town. On the way back to Oaxaca the group will stop for lunch at a local restaurant. (Note: tour price does not include lunch.)

TALK:
ABSENCE of WOMEN ARTISTS in a TEXTILE MUSEUM? BELIEVE IT or NOT!
Presented by Hector MenesesDirector: Museo Textil de Oaxaca

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 5 PM
MX$90 (M) MX 130 (NM)

For a couple of years now, and more and more recently, art museums are reassessing their histories, programmes, and collections to embrace more diversity. Women are one of the several groups that have been kept aside in art history. How has this archaic view impacted a textile museum, where most of its ethnographic collections have been created by women? Are there any additional factors that should be taken into consideration in this reassessment? Maybe there is a crucial one: racism.
