Be the Change You Want To See

Reflecting on the events of the "Black Summer" and the huge impact of climate change we are all looking for ways to make changes for our future. In this edition we focus on simple things you can do to make a difference. From putting water in your garden for heat stressed wildlife to installing solar systems on your roof or driving an electric vehicle, we can all make positive changes for our common future.

A free screening of the climate change documentary, 2040, will be held at Bankstown Library on Wednesday 19th Feb at 6pm. Bookings are essential.

Heat stress can be fatal for wildlife
Heat stress can be fatal for wildlife
The recent extreme heat waves have caused many of our native animals, including bats, to become heat stressed. However, your safety comes first. Please remember never to touch a bat yourself. Bats should only be handled by fully vaccinated wildlife rescuers.
If you see a flying fox or bat near or on the ground, call WIRES (1300 094 737) or Sydney Wildlife (02 9413 4300) immediately for advice and assistance.

Thirsty creatures?
You can help thirsty wildlife by leaving bowls of fresh, clean, cool water in sheltered places. Remember, place a rock or stick in deeper bowls to allow smaller animals to get out.

Share your food waste
ShareWaste connects like-minded neighbours who want to make a positive impact on the environment by diverting food waste away from landfill. ShareWaste brings together food scraps donors with hosts who have the capacity to recycle this resource.  If you have a compost bin, worm farm or chicken coop you can register as a Sharewaste. Host and receive more food scraps to turn into compost for your garden. You would also help fellow Sharewaste members recycle their scraps and divert this useful resource away from landfill. Become a ShareWaste host.
Dumping is Down!
Illegal dumping in our area is down by 39% after a large scale education and awareness campaign to reduce illegal dumping last year. Our “Eyes On It” campaign has changed the way we manage illegal dumping, enabled us to focus on hot spots and better address factors that contribute to increased dumping.  45% of people who had done the wrong thing responded to the tape and stickers on the dumping bringing their items back in from the kerb.
