NOMINATION - de Volkskrant Beeldende Kunst Prijs 2020


Thami Mnyele Foundation alumna Sharelly Emanuelson has received a nomination from de Volkskrant Beeldende Kunst Prijs / Visual Art Prize during her residency in Thami Mnyele Foundation Award in December 2019.

We congratulate Sharelly for this wonderful achievement! The exhibition of the nominated artists can be seen from 1st February in Stedelijk Museum Schiedam.

The result of De Volkskrant Beeldende Kunst Prijs will be announced on the 5th March. 

There is an extra prize - The Public Prize - visitors of the museum can vote in the museum. The result of this prize will be announced around the 15th March. 

NEW RESIDENT 
 

As the first activity of 2020 in celebration of Thami Mnyele Foundation 30-year anniversary, we have invited Bart Luirink, ZAM Magazine to collaborate with us in the selection of an artist resident whose work will be focused on the life of Thami Mnyele himself. 
 

We are so happy to have our new resident Adam Belarouchia (b. 1993 Rabat Marokko) to work on this subject during his residency from 15 January till 15 March.


In 2018 Belarouchia was also a resident of the Thami Mnyele Foundation. He is familiar with the city Amsterdam and finished a mural and did a workshop with the Zina Salon. 

 

He also produced a city specific work with the dutch artists Marjet Zwaans and left stickers in the city what forms a map of a mark. 



Belarouchia is a graduate of the national institute of fine arts in Tetouan. Adam chases after ideas, in concern with the Moroccan urban and subcultures, and expresses them with different mediums, mainly digital ones. He started off creating animated GIFs and illustrations, he then created an animation called "Ana hna" ( I am here ) which won him the short animated movie prize "Grand Prix Aicha" FICAM, Meknes, and a one-month international animation residency in « L'abbaye de Fontevraud », France.

He went on with another project and put his one year at the University of Science of Rabat to good use, and merged between his love of science and art which resulted into the exposition "ch3l dow" (Light up) that took place at the cultural centre of Ain Sbaa « L’Uzine », Casablanca. he is now working on his first comic book called «A9oul asmaa» which treat the oppression in the Moroccan primary school. He also appeared on: « Skefkef 8 » Fanzine Rabat, « Halal » Fanzine Paris,« Live Room Urban art expo »’s Collective exhibition, Tangier. « Cervantes » Student Collective exhibition, Tetouan.

NEW SHOWS FROM THAMI MNYELE ALUMNI

As part of the celebration of 30-year Anniversary of Thami Mnyele Foundation, we have supported Thami Mnyele Foundation alumnus Abdulrazaq Awofeso (Nigeria) with his participation in the exhibition People & The Urban Reality in De Kerk of Arnhem Museum from 9th February to 17th May.

Especially for the exhibition, Abdulrazaq Awofeso makes two thousand hand-made wooden human figures that are all unique. Awofeso is a resident of Lagos, with over 20 million inhabitants the largest city in Africa and also the fastest growing metropolis on earth, who wants to evoke empathy with its wooden figures.

Thami Mnyele Foundation alumnus Em'kal Eyongakpa (Cameroon) is participating in the fifth edition of the exhibition series Positions by the Van Abbemuseum -- Telling Untold Stories, together with Mounira al Solh, Mercedes Azpilicueta, Anna Dasović, and Quinsy Gario.

The artists in Positions #5 work with different forms of storytelling, witnessing and giving testimony. They do this in relation to forgotten, marginalised or silenced histories. These stories span nineteenth-century novels in Argentina, voices from the rivers of Cameroon or the 1969 uprisings in Curaçao. They range from deeply personal accounts to classified state documents.

This exhibition will be on show until 8th March 2020.

Three alumni from Thami Mnyele Foundation Atta Kwami (Ghana/UK), Michael Tsegaye (Ethiopia) and Option Dzikamai Nyahunzvi (Zimbabwe) for participating in the group exhibition "ROOTS & ROUTES" of Galerie SANAA 10 years anniversary.

The exhibition is Utrecht until end of 15th February 2020.

Thami Mnyele Foundation alumna Ina van Zyl (South Africa) presents her works at exhibition 'depARTment STORE - 75 years of Visual Arts in Heerlen' at SCHUNCK, among with Karel Appel, Armando, Maria Barnas, Eugene Brands, Charlotte Dumas, Marlene Dumas, Hadassah Emmerich, Romy Finke, Daan van Golden and more.

The exhibition will last until 15th March 2020.
