The Everglades remember

The chemical signature left behind by hurricanes, fires, cold snaps and droughts can linger in the slow-moving water of the Florida Everglades for up to a decade. Dr. John Kominoski explains these findings.

FIU researchers, Dr. Michael Ross and Dr. Danielle Ogurcak, found that more than 30 percent of the trees on Big Pine Key died in the months following Hurricane Irma.

Water dominates conversation at Everglades Conference

The Aquarius Reef Base is the world’s only operating underwater laboratory. NEEMO is a NASA analog mission that sends astronauts, scientists and engineers to Aquarius to train and conduct research to prepare for deep space exploration and missions aboard the International Space Station.

Carissa Gervasi, graduate student with the Institute, wrote an award-winning essay about the declining abundance of Jack Crevalle in South Florida and the concern in the local fishing community. Her essay won the 2019 American Fisheries Society (AFS) Student Writing Contest.

TCI accepting applications for camera-trapping workshop

The Institute's Tropical Conservation Institute is hosting a camera-trapping workshop from April 27 to May 8. This two-week workshop, led by experts in the field, focuses on the use of camera traps for estimating animal density and occupancy probability, particularly for wildlife management and conservation.   • Dr. Jay Sah has received a new award from the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) to study the status of vegetation structures and composition within the habitat of the Case Sable Seaside Sparrow. 
  • Dr. Daniel Gann has received a new award from the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) to develop algorithms around submerged aquatic vegetation - spectral detection.
  • Dr. Demian Champman has received a new award from Dalhousie University to conduct research on unlocking the local meat trade.

Event Name: Water Radio: Reading Camp

Info: Join O, Miami and Fereshteh Toosi for a literary night ride on Biscayne Bay!We're hosting group readings of poetic and lyrical texts on the water. Unlike a traditional book club, the Reading Camp does not require homework. During each group poetry reading, we cast off the isolation of this ordinary activity.
  • Ticket covers tandom kayak, paddles, life vest, s’mores, and poetry.

  • Plan ahead for the upcoming Reading Camp gatherings on Wednesdays from 6-9 PM at BBC: 11/6, 12/4, 1/8, 2/5 & 3/4

This event is for ages 16+. We launch from the Biscayne Bay campus of Florida International University. Limited metered parking is available. Please consider carpool or bus options. Arrive early, bring a photo ID and meet us at the Recreation Center front desk at 6:45 in order to complete a waiver form.

Weather permitting, Reading Camp will conclude with a campfire and snacks. Each participant will also go home with a copy of the reading.

Info: Please plan to join us for Hinshaw's 4th Annual Sea Level Rise & Climate Change Conference where we will provide corporate decision makers with the right tools to navigate sea level rise. Conference emcee, Tom Hudson (WLRN Vice President of News), will facilitate the conversation around the current results of resilience efforts in South Florida; the economic, legal, and financial implications of sea level rise; and what the State of Florida is doing to continue to prepare for this imminent threat.

Research opportunities (MS and PhD) are available in the Malone Disturbance Ecology Lab (http://malonelab.fiu.edu/) at Florida International University. 

Potential project topics include: (1) Fire regimes and community change in the Florida Everglades (GIS and Remote Sensing). (2) Hurricane induced greenhouse gas hotspots in wetland ecosystems (Carbon Fluxes; Remote Sensing). (3) Megafires and landscape patterns (GIS and Remote Sensing). (4) Hydrology and the greenhouse carbon balance of Everglade wetlands (Carbon Fluxes). (5) Disease risk in Great Basin five-needle pines (GIS and Remote Sensing). (6) Maximizing carbon sequestration in crop production.

Inquiries are welcome from prospective students interested in disturbance ecology, ecosystem ecology, data science, simulation modeling, or uncertainty analysis. Applicants should be self-motivated, excited to work as part of a multi-investigator project, and be comfortable working in a diverse collaborative setting.
