One of the reasons Trump fills me with so much rage is that he circumnavigates any sense of order. He manages to twist or bypass our constitution, the justice system, and the if-then-then-that he opted into when elected.

While Trump flaunts his disregard for systems, others falsely claim to uphold them. This is why I feel concerned about Facebook’s Oversight Board for content moderation. How will an internally-selected board review content to ensure it’s “aligned with Facebook’s values” if we aren’t in agreement about what those values are in the first place? It’s not enough to talk a big game, you must practice your values.

There is often a gap between intent and behavior. We take this on internally and with our clients by identifying day-to-day actions associated with each value. For example, one client demonstrates dedication to inclusivity by offering a pay-what-you-can membership option. One of Sharehold’s values is sustainability, whether that’s financial or personal, and one way we embody this is scheduling four breaks in client work throughout 2020 (in addition to vacation time) for the team to spend restorative time offline.

What else can we do to bring our systems and values to life?

P.S. You’re not imagining things, this newsletter came early this week! We’re curious if you prefer reading it on Mondays or Thursdays. Your feedback is always welcome.

Remember holacracy, the org design theory management system trend popularized by Zappos? Zappos has course-corrected management structure to refocus on its trademark customer service – though they remain decentralized because, “really, whoever is closest to the customers should be making those choices and decisions.” Hear, hear!
Speaking of bringing values into action, we’re loving the Guide to Internal Communication Basecamp shared last week. Among our favorite points: immediate responses are only for true emergencies, the inclination towards brevity, and the importance of giving time to let meaningful conversations unfold. Set aside a solid hour to listen to this Learning REWIRED interview with Kit Krugman on how companies are adapting to the expectation of expanded corporate responsibility within their teams. One takeaway: shifting power is processing trauma. We could not have said it better ourselves!
Speaking of shifting power, we’re inspired by Yancey Strickler’s Bentoism, a framework for defining and expanding self-interest to the “future us.” How we define and create value is changing and this model is at the forefront.
I’ve been writing a lot lately and take comfort in this article on the enemies of writing. It’s applicable to our community-building work too. The dark side of belonging is a fear of breaking the norm. As the author writes, “the mob has the final edit.” Oomph.
We don’t often share job listings, but this one is a must-see. Sharehold client and our frequent co-working spot, The Wing, is hiring a digital community strategist to expand the community beyond the walls of Wing locations –go get ‘em!
We’ve all heard about the loneliness epidemic by now, though despite growing resources, little seems to be happening to solve it. That’s why we love Jillian Richardson’s ideas in her book Unlonely Planet around destigmatizing loneliness and moving towards congregation.
Sharehold is a progress company. As an innovation agency focused on people-driven change, we help organizations undertake self-sustaining transformation for, with, and by their people.
