 A CONVERSATION WITH
 JEAN CASE
CEO of the Case Impact Network and Chair of National Geographic, Jean Case, joined us today to discuss how inclusive capitalism is key to a healthy economy and reinvigorating the American dream. Today, the majority of capital flows to fewer people and fewer places, and Case believes that innovation occurs when that capital is distributed to a broader more diverse group of people. Case also shed light on how her five fearless principles from her book, “Be Fearless: 5 Principles for a Life of Breakthrough,” can be influential when approaching these types of decisions and social issues.  FIRESIDE CHAT WITH
 BOBBY TURNER
“If you want to treat a problem in society then the government and philanthropy are fine, but if you really want to cure it, if you want to create sustainable and durable solutions that stick, we’ve got to harness market forces to tackle these issues.” Our 2020 Winter Innovation Summit main stage speaker Bobby Turner, CEO of Turner Impact Capital, addressed today’s attendees on how to do well while doing good in the impact investing space.

 SPECIAL REMARKS FROM
 TED BUNCH
A Call to Men CEO Ted Bunch spoke to our day one attendees about healthy manhood and the socialization that influences how everyone treats women. As Bunch says, “we have to shift the way we look at things and look at things a little more critically, and look at things in ways that as men, we want start reflecting on things a little more.” If we can start acknowledging that these learned behaviors can be reversed, we can combat violence and discrimination against women. #MoveMountains

 PANEL ON IMPROVING
YOUR RETURNS
THROUGH AWARENESS AND INTENTION
Gendered expectations in the workplace are harmful and must be addressed. As Ted Bunch put it, “working fathers can face pushback for spending time with their family,” while “motherhood triggers false assumptions that women are less committed to their careers.” Breaking down these barriers requires providing diversity and inclusion efforts that include education for the dominant group.

Strategic Investments for Maximum Impact:
Current Opportunities in Early Childhood

“You have to solve things locally in order to solve them nationally.”

Barriers to Innovation in Housing Affordability
“Impact investing is critical to solving a lot of these issues. We have to have folks who look at the financing model differently. The money is out there we just have to figure out how to give it to people who need it. It’s not simple but it’s vital.” —Kitty McKune

Data, Impact, & Opportunity Zones
“Opportunity zones are one tool in a large toolbox for communities and municipalities to promote the outcomes that they think are most important.”
Impact for Everyone
“One person, in one village can’t actually make that big of a difference. You need to realize that being in your position, with your privilege, getting your education, you can actually make a difference. If you can use the privilege that you have you can actually change the system.”  —Jay Limpan

Innovative Finance in Higher Education
“Philanthropists need to stop funding research and op-eds about problems with higher institution business models. They need to think of the positive incentives and how institutions can access different levels of capital.”
—Terri Taylor

Minding the Gap: A Cross-Sector Approach to Equity
“24% of woman entrepreneurs get funding and less than 1% of colored entrepreneurs get VC funding. We have to change that”
—Silvia Mah, Ad Astra Ventures
