The Delaware General Health District and the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) continue to closely monitor the 2019-nCoV (novel Coronavirus), which was first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have confirmed 11 cases of novel coronavirus within the United States, there are no confirmed cases in Ohio and our state remains at very low risk.
WE ARE PREPARED
The Health District is closely watching any emerging situations by performing daily monitoring of reportable diseases, including 2019-nCoV.  As with any reportable disease, the Health District will contact you if you have a travel history to China or exposure to a confirmed case of novel coronavirus.

ODH and Butler County General Health District confirmed on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020, two possible cases who are students at Miami University tested negative for the novel coronavirus.

It is important to note that there are 7 different types of coronavirus. The new (novel) 2019-nCoV virus should not be confused with the other human coronaviruses that people around the world commonly get infected with, including 229E, NL63, OC43 and HKU1.
RISKS AND SYMPTOMS
While person-to-person spread among close contacts has been detected with this virus, at this time this virus is NOT currently spreading in any community in Ohio.

Being symptomatic alone is not cause for panic. Neither is having traveled to Wuhan or being around someone who recently returned from China. People who present as possible cases have symptoms such as fever, cough and/or difficulty breathing AND been exposed to the new virus, such as through travel to Wuhan, Hubei province, China or been in contact with a possible or confirmed 2019-nCoV.
ACTION PLAN
On Jan. 31, 2020 The U.S. Department of State has issued a Level 4 Travel Advisory for China: do not travel to China due to 2019-nCoV.

On Jan. 31, 2020 the President of the United States signed a Proclamation on Suspension of Entry as Immigrants and Nonimmigrants of Persons who Pose a Risk of Transmitting 2019 Novel Coronavirus.
  • Beginning Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020, U.S. citizens returning to the U.S. who have been in Hubei province in the previous two weeks will be subject to 14 days of mandatory quarantine.
  • U.S. citizens returning to the U.S. who have been to other parts of China within the previous two weeks will be subject to screening and 14 days of self-monitored quarantine.
  • The U.S. government currently is denying entry to the U.S. to foreign citizens who have been to China in the previous two weeks. (Immediate family members of U.S. citizens and permanent residents are exempt.)
  • The United States also plans to send all flights from China to only 11 airports, none in Ohio.
PROTECT YOURSELF!
While the novel coronavirus is a global concern, the Health District encourages residents to be attentive to protecting themselves against Influenza. So far this season, Delaware County has had 17 flu-associated hospitalizations. Continue to protect yourself and others by following these tips:
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes.
  • Don't go to work or school when you feel ill. Stay at home and rest.
  • Avoid exposure to others who are sick.
