What is Buddhism For?
Exploring Happiness, Ethics, and Practice
with William Edelglass
Monday, March 2, 2020
Starting at 7:00 pm
During the regular Monday Night Sit
Everything we do, some people say, is aimed at gaining happiness. And Buddhist practice, it is often said, is particularly helpful in increasing happiness. But in the Saṃyutta Nikāya we read: “What others speak of as happiness (sukha), That the noble ones say is suffering (dukkha)” (SN 35.136). Together, we will explore how Buddhist conceptions of happiness might open up new spaces for thinking of the relationship between happiness, ethics, justice, and practice.
There is NO FEE for this event. The teachings of the Buddha have been sustained by the 2,600 year old tradition of dana, a Pali word meaning "generosity.” Participants are encouraged to help FIMC facilitate such programs as well as the teacher by offering donations at the end of the meeting. In the act of giving, we develop our ability to let go, cultivate a spirit of caring, and honor our inter-connectedness.
