MIDWEST RAILWAY PRESERVATION SOCIETY

February 2020

New Arrival on Site

Midwest Railway Preservation Society and The Catalpa Falls Group, LLC have reached an agreement for storage of the Chippewa Creek Pullman passenger car at our facilities during its' restoration.

The Chippewa Creek, originally ordered by the Pennsylvania Railroad and numbered 8369 was delivered in 1949 for the Broadway Limited and is the only surviving car of its' kind of the 24 car Creek series built by Pullman. The car came fitted for 12 duplex single rooms and four double bedrooms. The Broadway Limited was at one time the flagship route for the Pennsy System and ran as an all-Pullman train until 1967. The Broadway Limited made its' last run on Amtrak on September 9, 1995.

The Catalpa Falls Group has a number of cars in its' possession, one of which, the Catalpa Falls, is fully restored and in service on excursion trips. The Catalpa Falls was another of the Pullman cars ordered after World War II and delivered in 1949 for the Broadway Limited. A bedroom lounge car, its' original PRR number was 8404. The Group has plans to eventually restore nine cars including a baggage car and hopes to one day operate a complete Broadway Limited excursion train.

Complete restoration of the Chippewa Creek is anticipated to take three years. Midwest will assist in the restoration by providing labor and services for sandblasting, painting and truck work to name just a few. The Historic B&O Roundhouse provides the perfect setting for this restoration because it is equipped with heavy lifting jacks and other ancillary equipment and Midwest personnel are highly qualified and have the experience to do the work.
The Chippewa Creek sits on the lead after delivery to Midwest. The top photo shows the compartment side of the car. The hallway side of the car is shown in the photo to the left above. Both views are looking from the "A" end of the car. The plaque shown in the photo above right is mounted next to the vestibule at the "B" end of the car.

Storage Track Demolition

Midwest made good use of the mild mid-January weather by assigning a work crew to tear out a large portion of the storage track next to the roundhouse.

For years, MRPS has been plagued by problems caused by flooding of the turntable pit. The drain line running from the pit has been badly clogged with a section of it damaged to the point where it needs replacement. Because of this we have been dependent on external sump pumps to drain the pit as it fills with ground water, rain water and melting snow. During some winters when the pump failed, the pit would fill and ice up to the extent that the turntable was unusable until the spring thaw.

After much investigation, it was found that the drain runs beneath the storage track and connects to the sewer line. Unfortunately, in order to perform the repairs, brickwork at the floor of the pit needs to be dug up as well as the ground beneath the track. Now that the track has been tore up, the real work can begin.

The storage track was in great need of maintenance with many of the ties badly rotted. The replacement of the turntable drain also requires rebuilding of the storage track allowing us to cross two items off of MSRP's lengthy to-do list once completed.
Greg Antz cuts through the rail while volunteers pull spikes (top photos, left and right). After the spikes were removed the long welded sections of rail were lifted using the crane and set aside for later replacement (above left). The ties sans rail prior to removing them using our forklift, "Big Red" (above right). The photo of the turntable below was taken last winter and shows a frozen pond below the steel structure of the bridge. The drain replacement should make these occurrences a thing of the past.

4070 Progress

Volunteers continue working on the cab of 4070. One side panel has been removed and is being used as a template for construction of the replacement. The restoration is being done in sections to preserve the structural integrity of the cab. In order to expedite this project we are considering adding Wednesday work sessions to the schedule.

Parts in storage are still being cataloged for future reference in order to facilitate planning. There is also an opportunity for an experienced draftsperson to create drawings of some parts that may require an accurate layout of hole locations or cut-outs.

Anyone interested in helping out on this project can sign up online using Signup Genius. A link to the program is included in the weekly Saturday work email to members. If you are unsure of your abilities but want to help out, contact us and we will let you know how we can utilize your talents.
A volunteer grinds off the remaining bolt heads on one side panel (top left). The panel rests against the cab structure after being removed (top right). Nuts are being ground off to facilitate removal of the original brass window frames (middle left). Vertical support angles are added for temporary support during reconstruction (middle right). Inspection of the roof structure takes place from the top down (lower left). The new side panel is being fitted in place (lower right).

"America" Update

The walls of the dining room are being painted now that the repair work has been completed (above left). Stainless steel panels in the Amtrak kitchen car are slated to be utilized as new wall panels in the "America" kitchen area to continue modernization while raising funds for new appliances (above right).
Work continues on the "America" and continues to be a high priority for Midwest.

Wall panel repairs have been completed along with wallpaper repair and replacement in the dining room. The lounge interior walls are still undergoing repairs similar to those performed in the dining room where required due to water damage. Peeling paint has been scraped and the walls are being repainted. Upon completion the car will be given a thorough cleaning throughout.

The HVAC system was recently inspected to determine the necessary repairs. After pressurizing the system, the blowers became functional but it was then determined that there is a slow leak in the system causing it to fail. The leaks need to be found and repaired before the system can be recharged.

To continue making progress, it has been decided to remove stainless steel wall panels and mounting strips from the Amtrak dining car that is in storage for use in the kitchen. This process will save Midwest a few thousand dollars while fund raising continues for the purchase of new appliances. The panels from the kitchen car can be easily replaced when restoration of the Amtrak car is resumed.

Another big job yet to begin is replacement of the double window seals that have deteriorated over time causing the panes to fog up. The hope is that the windows can be cleaned and reinstalled with new seals without having to replace any window panes.

There is still much to do before the car is ready for private excursions. President Steve Emling and Executive Director Steve Korpos attended the annual RPCA Conference in January that was held in Albuquerque, New Mexico and networked with other private rail car owners for future partnering opportunities as well as pointers on marketing.

The hope was to have all repairs completed this winter so the "America" could start operating on excursion trips this summer. At this time it is doubtful that the car will be ready. Funds are lacking, slowing down progress in areas where items need to be purchased.

Volunteer help is needed and will be greatly appreciated. Let us know if there is anything you can do to help complete this project with labor or cash donations.
Grant Applications

MRPS officers and volunteers have been busy the past few weeks preparing applications for grants that are available to assist organizations like ours to fund ongoing restoration projects.

There are many projects underway that require funding, but this year the Board has decided to concentrate on funding for the roundhouse stalls 6 through 10 restoration. If we are fortunate enough to be awarded the grants, we will rebuild the brick wall at stall 10 and complete the roof which to date has been restored into stall 8. Completion of this will allow us to start installation of the locomotive sized paint booth that was donated to us by General Electric and is in storage on site.

Last year we were awarded grants from The John H. Emery Rail Heritage Trust and The Nickel Plate Historical Society that were used for the restoration work on our Nickel Plate 90 passenger car.

We wish to thank all of those involved in this activity and hopefully their hard work will be rewarded.

RPCA William Fuehring Fund

William Fuehring was the founder of the Railroad Passenger Car Alliance. The organization was founded to foster and assist in the preservation, display and operation of rail passenger equipment and museums preserving the history of rail transportation in North America.

The William Fuehring Fund was instituted by RPCA to make it easier for young individuals to become active in the railroad industry. Every year the fund pays 100% of the cost of one candidate to attend the annual RPCA conference. The covered expenses include travel, hotel accommodations, attendance at seminars, the annual banquet and any additional activities.

Last year's awardee attended the annual conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico in January. Applications for next years conference, to be held in Spencer, North Carolina are available on the RPCA website. Applicants must be between 19 and 30 years of age, a member of RPCA or an organization that is a member of RPCA, have not previously participated in the program and submit an essay on why they should be considered for the program.

Applications must be submitted by November 10th and the winner will be notified by December 10th. Midwest has a number of members that qualify for consideration. Anyone interested can contact the office for more information or visit the RPCA website where the application form is available on line.

Membership Renewals

MRPS Membership renewals are now being sent out via email rather than conventional USPS "snail mail". Besides saving the organization money for paper, envelopes and postage the new format saves volunteer time, which in itself is a valuable commodity.

Keep an eye out for your renewal. The forms can be returned by mail or dropped off at the office.
Still Looking for Gift Shop Assistance

Midwest is still seeking someone to take over operation of the gift shop. If you would like to help out or know of someone that may, please let us know. We would like to have training completed in time for the first Open Houses of the year, the Bunny Runs, in April.
Simple Desk Work

For any member that would like to volunteer their services but doesn't want to get dirty, we have some simple desk work that needs to done.

Since MRPS has increased yearly dues all of our existing brochures contain outdated information. We have stickers containing the new dues information that need to be attached to the brochures to cover the old, incorrect information. This activity will enable us to save the cost of reprinting new brochures.

Let us know if you are interested, or, you can just come down on a Saturday during a regularly scheduled work session.

Happenings "aROUND the HOUSE"

Alex Ciparis and Karen Bates are seen here on a recent Saturday working on our Alco 123 trying to locate and repair a few engine leaks.  Winter is down time for the locomotive and this is when most maintenance tasks are performed.
The twin dining cars that were once a part of President Jimmy Carter's "Peanut Express" that transported the former President and his entourage to Washington, D.C. from Georgia sit on the storage track. Interior restoration was well underway when the project was abruptly stopped. The cars still bear the Amtrak markings.
A peek inside of the Amtrak kitchen car where restoration work was well underway when the project was stopped. Accessible wall panels are slated to be used as wall panel replacements in the "America" kitchen. The number of panels needed is under investigation.
Roof repairs are completed and side panels that were cut open to repair rusted out vertical supports have been replaced. There is a lot of work remaining to restore window frames.
The Palm Point restoration has been put on a temporary hold while money is being raised to continue the project. The windows have been buttoned up and a coat of primer added to the car for rust prevention while it is stored outside until the project is restarted.
This souvenir button from the past is a reminder of what our goal for the future remains. Restoration is a slow process but through the commitment of our members we are hoping to one day complete the task.
